Fickell's Coaching Staff
Might as well separate it from the rest of the pro/con Fickell threads:

Quote:Cincinnati: During his presser today, Luke Fickell noted two guys that will likely have roles on his staff moving forward that were in the audience. One was Doug Phillips (director of player personnel at Iowa State), and the other was Marcus Freeman (who spent last season as the co-defensive coordinator / linebackers coach at Purdue). We’ll update as more becomes official.

Someone ran down why they wanted Marcus Freeman here in a thread elsewhere. Care to elaborate again? Can't find the post and I'm curious.

I believe he played for Luke and his position group at Ohio State. Pretty good chance they recruited him back in 2004. Freemans a former parade all American out of Huber Heights Ohio. My guess is he's got a pretty good recruiting contacts in Ohio as well

Didnt realize he was co-dc at Purdue. Obviously their defense was awful but not sure how much could/should be attributed to him.

I'm hearing some rumors about another addition, not enough to go on yet.

I'd be surprised if he's a candidate for defensive coordinator. More likely he's going to be our linebackers coach.

Would love to see us pry Mike Vrable away from the NFL.

Rumbling out of Columbus is that the evil Empire may add a couple of zeros to Coombs deal to keep him.

thats a bummer. After Weekend at Tommy's we could use the energy and passion he brings. Plus there were rumbling he would be Associate HC here, which is perfect for him

A lot of folks don't want to admit it around here but he really is a key component to their recruiting efforts.

Agreed. Broo was talking about this today that the Columbus news guys were saying that it may come down to whether or not Cincinnati can sweeten the pot enough. Apparently he wants to come to Cincinnati but urban may give him a different title and more money.

i think most are willing to concede the recruiting part. it's the coaching part that begs a suspension of disbelief. Haven't heard anyone heartily endorse his coaching ability. osu has the payroll to have someone that is solely a recruiter. At Cincy, all the position coaches have to coach.

RE: Fickell's Coaching Staff
Unless I misheard, CLF just said that bringing coaches with him from OSU is "probably not going to be an option at this point." That would be quite disappointing, West Side Jesus Christ (some call him Kerry Coombs) would have been an incredible asset here for recruiting.

Coombs himself tweeted he is focused on "coaching his unit" and preparing for the playoffs, says "I'm a Buckeye".

FWIW.

RE: Fickell's Coaching Staff
I think Coombs makes somewhere in the range of $350,000-$400,000 in his current position. I'm literally just spit-balling here, but I would think UC is probably coming at him with at least $500,000 and the title of associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator.

RE: Fickell's Coaching Staff
I would like to see at least one former Bearcat player on this staff. Several former DBs in the coaching ranks

Mike Mickens
Blue Adams
De'Angelo Smith (GA at Michigan State)
