Applewhite was probably the right decision. Kiffin would have been a splash, but he has no TX connections and would be gone in 1-2 year(s). Orlando is a great defensive mind, but again, minimal ties to TX (zero outside of his time at UH) and his offensive philosophy would have been a complete unknown.
Applewhite has the pedigree (coached under Mack, Saban, and Lyin' Tom), is a great recruiter, and is on a first name basis with every major HS program in TX.
One of the pundits I heard said that the value of the buyout was the problem. Kiffin wanted a low buyout which is like saying "Yeah I'll coach your team for a year, 2 max, then I'm gone."
With Applewhite, they may actually get a coach who will stick around for a half decade or more.
But the dilemma for a school like Houston is if they have a really successful coach, they're gona loose him.
We know that, but we want to at least get paid a fair amount when we do. The days of losing someone for $2 million and then they sign a $30+ million contract are over.

So was Nate making odds on when Houston would lose Tom Herman?
Nope, but he's making odds on when Herman will get fired and be coaching UTSA. Over/under is 1.5 seasons.
lol I think we are happy with Frank Wilson right now. How are yall feeling about the UTSA game next season?

Expecting a win, but opening on the road against an in-state (I hate to call UTSA a rival, but for lack of a better word..) rival could cause some problems. We go in as the hunted, which has proven to not be a good situation for us. Our AD needs to learn how to schedule. If we're going to open on the road, it needs to be a P5 team so that we can use it as motivation all summer, not the other way around.
What about you? Before you about Ward leaving, this is his replacement.
