The Commercial Appeal has hired reporter Mark Giannotto to cover University of Memphis men's basketball.

Giannotto, who starts his new role Jan. 2, comes to Memphis from The Washington Post, where he has been a sports reporter since 2009. He currently covers prep sports, and has also covered Virginia and Virginia Tech athletics. He's also served as backup reporter on the Washington Capitals beat and written for The Washington Post Magazine.

^^^I agree completely. I've never felt so connected (through the news) with the Tigers football program as I have since Tom Schad took over the beat.

Tigers may have had the best BB beat writers in the nation over the years. I can pretty much name them in order but the stars were Lapides, John Stamm, Woody Paige, Mike DeCourcey, and Dan Wolken. Jason had potential but IMO defined the scope of the job too narrowly.
