What a twelve team playoff looks like this year
I put this on another thread but thought I would give the idea its own discussion
Here is how it looks
AAC Temple 23
ACC Clemson 3
Big 12 Oklahoma 7
Big Ten Penn State 5
CUSA W Kentucky 35
MAC WMU 12
MWC San Diego State 34
PAC 12 Washington 4
SEC Alabama 1
Sun Belt App St UR

OSU 2
Michigan 6

BYES Alabama 1 OSU 2 Clemson 3 Washington 4 that host winners of the first week by seed, not bracket

Penn State 5 Hosts W Kentucky 35
Michigan 6 hosts San Diego State 34
Oklahoma 7 hosts Temple 23
WMU 12 hosts App St

I think first round losers could qualify for a bowl game

12 teams is too many. I still say a 6-team playoff is the true sweet spot and no AQs. You give byes to the top 2 schools and play on-campus for the 1st round. Use the current setup within the bowl system for the Semifinal and Final.

I see this "losers go to the bowl system" thing pop up a few times, and my question is: Why would a losing team want to further extend their season with a bowl that has less meaning to them than it does their opponent? It seems counterintuitive.

I know they do it in Europe when Champions League teams that lose in the group stage get sent to the Europa League, but that's a little different—for starters, the Europa winner gets a ticket to the next season's Champions League, so they're not just playing out the string in the soccer equivalent of the NIT.

RE: What a twelve team playoff looks like this year
Actually, if you say "What a 12-team playoff looks like this year", we already have a 12-team setup this year in the NY6 (=12 teams). So no need to change the teams.

Top 4, 1st Round Bye: 1. Alabama, 2. Clemson, 3. Ohio State, 4. Washington

#5 Penn State vs #12 Western Michigan ---> Faces #4 Washington
#6 Michigan vs #11 Auburn --> Faces #3 Ohio State
#7 Oklahoma vs #10 Florida State --> Faces #2 Clemson
#8 Wisconsin vs #9 USC --> Faces #1 Alabama

I agree though, if they turned the NY6 (12 teams) into a full-blown playoff, which IMO will happen at some point in the not too distant future, you would take away from Conf vs Conf matchups -- and just rankings (but keeping Conf Champ associations). Therefore, Auburn wouldn't have made it -- they'd be replaced by Colorado, and all the seed #s would be the rankings, besides WMU, the G5 @ #12 (instead of #15).

It's going when it expands to 8, not 6, not 12.

I say 24 teams limke FCS, and used the bowl sites as the playoffs. 10 Conference champs.

Temple
Clemson
Penn State
Oklahoma
Western Kentucky
Western Michigan
San Diego State
Washington
Alabama
Appalachian State

At large bids.

Ohio State
USF
Michigan
West Virginia
Boise State
BYU
Louisville
Florida State
Colorado
USC
Navy
Wisconsin

Top 8 in the committee's polls get the first round bye.

If the NCAA ran the FBS playoffs and followed the same policies as their other championships, there would be a 20 team playoff with 10 conference Champs and 10 at-large.

RE: What a twelve team playoff looks like this year
I'd like a 16-team playoff with 1) the top 6 conference champions in the top 6 seeds, 2) a maximum of 2 teams per conference, and 3) all conference champions included. Interesting idea for a second tournament - maybe 8 teams with a maximum of 2 teams per conference. Playoff starts in week 15, tournament in week 16. Give the NY6 Bowls a chance to buy the semi-finals and finals of both.

This season, there are 8 bowl games that feature top 25 matchups, plus 1 more in the championship This model would give 13 top 25 matchups in weeks 15 and 16, plus likely 6 more in the semi-finals and finals.

Playoffs
1 Alabama
2 Clemson
3 Washington
4 Penn St
5 Oklahoma
6 Western Michigan
7 Ohio St
8 USC
9 Florida St
10 Oklahoma St
11 Auburn
12 Temple
13 Navy
14 San Diego St
15 Western Kentucky
16 App St

Tournament
1 Michigan
2 Wisconsin
3 Colorado
4 Louisville
5 West Virginia
6 Florida
7 Stanford
8 LSU

Week 15
App St @ Alabama
Western Kentucky @ Clemson
San Diego St @ Washington
Navy @ Penn St
Temple @ Oklahoma
Auburn @ Western Michigan
Oklahoma @ Ohio St
Florida St @ USC

Week 16
LSU @ Michigan
Stanford @ Wisconsin
Florida @ Colorado
West Virginia @ Louisville
USC @ Alabama
Ohio St @ Clemson
Auburn @ Washington
Temple @ Penn St

Eight is the next step for the CFP. If anyone thinks the Power 4 (The Big 12 will be gone in a few years) will ever give The American, CUSA, Mountain West and MAC equal representation in a playoff you haven't been paying attention.

I would expect some type of best of Group of 4 for a spot with the Power 4 getting the other three as at large bids.

I doubt we ever see an NCAA basketball tournament type equal access playoff for college football. Too much old money

So it won't matter to me. I do not find the random game as enjoyable anymore with all the stupid penalties that make playing defense impossible. They have to give me a reason to be invested

As for the money, it already gets distributed to everyone. The 12 team playoff just eliminates the payola feel to it.
