RE: Houston promotes Applewhite to head coach
I like this hire over Kiffin. Since I expect Herman to have a successful career at Texas, I don't see Applewhite (assuming he's successful at UH) possibly leaving to coach at his alma mater any time soon.

That's gr8 for him, as I was wondering what was going to happen with him if Kiffen were running things. He deserves this opportunity and will make the most of it. Very Under-the-radar coach that will make waves in this conference

Good for Houston. Didn't think Kiffen was a good fit.

Don't think MA will treat UH like a spring board if he's successful. Kiffin absolutely would've ... also didn'y like the fit

Kiffin will most likely move to LSU and become OC there. He and Orgeron are good friends.

Huh?

So now the previous three UH coaches have left for major programs and you think Applewhite will just do the "honorable" thing and remain at UH if he's successful and P5 schools call on him?

Well since the buyout is the contract he is indicating that he is willing to be there for at least a few years.

Oh, wow. The first iron-clad contract in sports that will ensure both he and the University require him to coach at UH for five years.

The cold hard truth nowadays is that loyalty isn't rewarded in the coaching ranks. Why should a coach being loyal to a school when he is always a bad season or two away from getting fired.

Yeah, and more importantly, his "loyalty" isn't voluntary--it is apparently being leveraged through a buyout provision.

Good for Houston and Major. Kiffin would have been better for us though - not a good HC and more PR.

I think Applewhite is going to struggle as the head man.

He sure is well known in Texas. He was one of the more memorable QB's at Texas in recent times.

The UH administration made pretty good choices in their last two HC's. Although you could be right, I have no reason to believe they have not thoroughly evaluated Applewhite's abilities.

True, and I'm basing this off an ex of mine who used to serve him at her establishment in Houston and what she's told me.

Who knows.

When a coach essentially agrees to pay the same amount to leave as he gets if he is fired that is pretty significant.

The difference normally is it costs the school a lot more to get rid of him that it does for him to leave.
