Stole this from beers' thread on the USM board:

To Stinkfist credit, he was consistently telling everyone it was worse than a simple sprain. If my bone was sticking out I'd be screaming and whining. Anyone ever question Mullens manhood should read this

Quite a few years back (2010 or so) USM had a staff member (Owen Bowen) who was rolled up on the sideline. It broke his leg and from what several people said you could see the bone pressing against his pant leg....in other words, had he had shorts on you would've seen the bone sticking out.

Steve DeBerg played through something similar when he was with Kansas City. Steve was a tough dude.

Why? There's no threat of further injury, death, or not being able to protect himself. Those would be the only reasons to pull someone. Kid says he's good to go with a hand injury, then let him play. I'd venture every lineman in the game has at least one broken finger if not multiple. Those guys dislocate digits all the time.

It was a compound fracture. That means a broken bone sticking out through the skin. That's a far cry from a dislocation. The risk of infection is much higher and bone infections can be serious. It's the job of the trainers and coaches to protect players.

It wasn't a fracture. The joint where the thumb meets the hand was dislocated and protruded through the skin. You just pop it back in. It's a common dislocation for the hand in injuries. This one was unusual in that it came through the skin and had to be stitched back up. No danger of infection in the bone.

I'll defer to Stinkfist on this one. He's an amateur orthopedist.

There are two orthopedic trauma physicians on the sidelines at USM at all times, with at least 5 certified athletic trainers. If they say it's fine, than I trust their opinion over yours. But do understand where you could feel that way, I kind of thought the same thing at first glance of this article (my bachelors degree is in sports medicine).
