Briles sues Baylor officials for libel and conspiracy
http://collegefootball.ap.org/article/br...m=AP_Top25

Former Baylor football coach Art Briles is suing three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn't report them.

The lawsuit also asserts that Baylor officials conspired to keep him from getting another coaching job.

I suspect Briles is angling for a payout to keep it on the hush-hush. Not that I think he deserves anything, but my guess is that Baylor isn't going to want this whole saga to be aired publicly.

He has a right to his day in court, I suppose.

Baylor is a private institution but I'd guess someone is going to get the court costs handed to them. Anyone on here a lawyer familiar with Texas law?

RE: Briles sues Baylor officials for libel and conspiracy
Baylor University, Ken Starr, Ian McCaw, Art Briles, the athletic program, the football program, the Big 12 and the NCAA are all at fault for this terrible situation. It was an environment and culture that was tolerated and accepted, and when complaints did come forward, they were brushed aside and disregarded. How many women, and how many individuals, had to suffer before someone or some body came in to not only stop it but punish those responsible for these heinous acts?

Art Briles is simply doing what he can to save face and get positive PR in hopes of one day becoming a head coach again. Unfortunately, as history as shown, if you win games, schools and organizations believe in second chances because it will help them make money and get exposure.

Do I think Briles innocent of any wrongdoing? No.

Do I think that Baylor admin conspired to throw him under the bus, in a last ditch effort? Absolutely. No doubt in my mind. Hope they settle for a nice chunk of change. Baptists have money, so it should be peanuts.

Your guess????? They have allowed the worst to be believed because they have kept much of their internal reports secret.

LOL. I'm no Baylor fan..trust me. I believe there are real and condemnable problems there.

My guess is that if it is settled, BU will simply be admitting the worst. If not, they've got enough dirt on Briles to force him to shut up.

I'd love to see this all aired in open court. But I doubt we're going to see it. Unless Baylor really has nothing to hide, which I seriously doubt.

He never would've filed if there was something really bad in an email, text, or recording that he didn't want to get out. There is nothing, at least that he knows about ...

Agreed. They tried to throw him under the bus to save themselves.

Oh, Briles' attorney could be telling Baylor....'my client will never coach again, so he's okay with getting some splatter. If this hits an open court, Baylor has much more to lose. Pay up ' or something like that. Now, Baylor could take the risk that Briles isn't bluffing, but 9 times out of 10, they are. Just file the lawsuit and hope the defendant just wants to put it behind them.

I was just saying it was pretty obvious they want as little to get out in the public as possible.

Right now it looks like all Briles has at risk is attorney's fees. Baylor risks having this drag on and on. And perhaps disclosing things damaging to Baylor.

The Title IX coordinator who quit said football players were only a small part of the rape allegations. It isn't clear how big the "football" part of the problem was and how much was a university wide issue. Clearly Baylor wants it viewed as a "football" problem so they can say they got rid of the coach and AD and the problem is gone.

Yes, good points!

Agreed 100%.

I really doubt that Briles was the main instigator of covering up crimes and hushing victims. As I said, I don't think he's free of any wrongdoing ... but I 100% believe that Baylor threw him under the bus and scapegoated him to the maximal extent.

Baylor has a long history of taking athletes who were academic risks. They sometimes had very high ranked recruiting classes by taking players who never ended up qualifying or did so barely. Briles may have done as their basketball coach Bliss did and extended it to character risks.

Well, such behavior doesn't seem warranted.

Their chief rival TCU has accomplished football success without the need for that, as far as I know. And SMU basketball success -- I know their coach got in trouble, but I don't think it was because of bad player behavior.
