I was a little upset/wary when Spiker burned all his freshmen's redshirts. You never know when it may be useful in the future to have a player one extra year. I think he could have kept Peck or Greens Redshirt.

Don't you need medical clearance to be a redshirt? I didn't think a healthy player can redshirt just by having the coach sit him on the bench for an entire year.

I like that Spike is focusing on depth and giving important minutes to guys at the end of the bench. As we know from what we watched the past 4 seasons, you can't win in college basketball with just 7-8 players.

I am pretty sure you can do either. If they don't play x percentage of the available minutes played they can be redshirted, same goes for medical as long as the meet the criteria for games/minutes played. If they have exceeded that then they cannot be redshirted. The medical only redshirt comes into play if you have already burned your allowed redshirt and you need special NCAA clearance to get that (ala Chris Fouch)

I understand your sentiment, but I also feel like there is going to be plenty of time to go around over the next couple of years. I dont have much of an issue with them sticking around its pretty typical for this level of basketball.

No the big schools redshirt some of their freshmen especially if a star is going to be one and done. This would give them time to grow and still have 4 years left. I think once you play one game/minute you burn your redshirt status ( think of the college football rule). I have faith in the new guy and I know it will probably be an average at best season.

RE: St. Joes
There are already two redshirts with the two transfers, Isabell and Harper that along with Canady's injuries, I don't think they could really afford to redshirt anyone. Both Green and Peck have played meaningful minutes so far so even though we have been fortunate with a walkon that can get a few minutes, I doubt it was ever a consideration to redshirt those guys.

That being said Hofstra did do it with a Jamal Robinson last year and were down to a pretty slim bench at times because of it. I think they considered playing him but the year was almost over so they held out. It is a bit different when you're asking two fifth-year seniors like Green and Tanksley to go out and not foul than two true freshmen like Lee and Jonnsson.
