Just under 2 and Rodney picked up his 4th. Can't afford to lose him tonight

22 seconds left up 2. Time to step up on defense here and no 3's. 2 straight poor offensive sets

72-71 St Joes wins. Tough tough loss. We were the better team but made too many mistakes and too many missed free throws. St Joes did not do anything to win this one. Kari appeared to be fouled on the last shot, but you can't let it come down to that type of call. We wasted 2 straight possessions prior to that one killing clock and making no attempt at scoring to increase the lead.

RE: St. Joes
Disappointing loss indeed. But not the end of the world, and for this season, the final score will have very little meaning in the grand scheme of things.

2 plays that stand out that really seemed to make the difference. Mojica's technical, which was completely unnecessary, not only cost Drexel 1 point at the foul like, but they lost Sammy #1 for several minutes down the stretch and were forced to use Sammy #2 for very important minutes at the end, after barely playing on the court all season.

The other play was early in the 2nd half when Rodney missed a very easy dunk, then he got his own rebound and the put back got stuck. I said to my buddies that those 2 missed points were going to be the difference, and it turned out to be the difference in a 1 point loss.

3 years in a row, Drexel lost very close games to SJU and in my 26 years as a Dragon, I can count 7 "woulda coulda shoulda" really close losses to SJU. Even though the games almost always favor the Hawks, it's been a really good rivalry, and it should probably continue. I was listening to the SJU postgame radio show on the way home, and they mentioned Kari Jonsson's name and said it will be fun pronouncing that name for the next 3 years, so it sounded like they're prepared to continue to play Drexel every year.

RE: St. Joes
I agree Mojica losing his cool there was not warranted and hurt them badly as it put him with 4 super early in the 2nd half. Even when he picked up his fifth on a silly foul his body language said all that needed to be said. We needed him because, when he played, he was shooting well and by not being out there, he ended up hurting us by not being an option.

Rodney missed a couple of dunks and seemingly a lot of free throws (seemed like more than 5). But I can't fault him since he carried the team all night and was literally doing everything for this team. The last 3 possessions just were not good ones as it seemed like we played to not lose instead of to win and that really made the difference. 2 shot clock violations and a blocked shot on a bad shot. You can't have that at the end of close games and expect to win.

This game was still a great challenge for our team because they really had to face adversity with foul trouble and injuries. I think Myles and Sam Green really answered the call in their minutes. John Moran also helped pitch in more than he could have expected, though he was seemingly trying too hard and took a couple poor shots. However, getting these guys real experience (15+ minutes for all 3) should only pay dividends when we run into adversity in conference play as well. Getting good looks at these players is always a good idea for the coaching staff, and Spiker has done this brilliantly.

Any info on Overton? What is the injury to the foot and any word on how long he's out?

RE: St. Joes
He was walking normally with his mini shoe boot. My guess because the next few games look to be easy wins ( Rider, Quinnipiac and Kean) He may be rested till conference play starts or Upenn game?

Rider and Quinnipiac on the road are not easy wins for this team. Normally you could say that Kean is an easy win, but since this team has a 3 game losing streak against non D1 opponents, nothing is guaranteed.

It was mentioned in the Inquirer, that it's a sprained ankle, so it sounds like something that should be fine in a couple of days or a few weeks.

RE: St. Joes
A couple of thoughts..

1. Recruiting - Spiker's kids are doing very well. Let's not forget, Peck was Bru's last pickup. Lee, Kari, and Sammy Green are all Spiker players.

2. Sammy #2 - Green actually looked pretty good. The kid's size is very deceptive. He's a big kid, and can play the wing. That might be a nice change of pace occasionally, and the 3 pointer he was credited for looked just as good as the one that was taken away by the traveling call. Point is, the kid had range.

3. Iceman - Kari (Cowree) was just off tonight. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. He's a freshman. It happens.

4. Rodney - The kid looked great. Nice double-double.

5. Major - While Overton was out, Canaday was back on the bench. It's great to see him out there with the team.

6. Read more here :-) http://alwaysadragon.com/1060-2/
