I remember people back east here seething over that season where he won the Heisman, and folks thinking the fix was in against Penn State. NC and Heisman both Big 8-bound that year, despite one of, if not PSU's best teams.
He was great to watch. You knew he was good for highlights.
To this day, I attribute some of those era's RB busts to the differences in playing surfaces. Garbage grass fields with bad drainage systems to concrete with green carpet. Bodies weren't conditioned to transition fast or comprehensively enough.

They're gonna look back at us as crazy for playing on concrete and carpet. Maybe they should have tested that before assuming a team could play on grass in the Astrodome, the first place to install Astroturf. Many ACL's, MCL's, ankles and individual pink matter would have been spared.

Wow that is bizzarre. I have to admit I did not know what happened to McNair and Phillips. Had to look it up.
Phillips committed suicide while serving a long prison sentence.
McNair was shot by his mistress in a murder-suicide by the mistress.
Now the speculation is that Salaam committed suicide.
Its all very wierd.

It all depended where you played. Some of those venues that copied designs, like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia...those places were garbage.
It wasn't like Astroturf itself was the problem...it was the upkeep and design at other places where it was installed. The Dome was a controlled environment...those outdoor ones were problems waiting to happen.

Rug burn was rug burn anywhere. Just because some were better than others doesn't mean it was a good idea. Thankfully, they now have developed turf that is a moderate upgrade over that.

And I was born in 1994! Not an auspicious year.
