It is interesting to see how people view our conference and team when it comes bowl season. When it comes to the P5, most pundits and fan bases to want to concentrate on the best conference for the year when it comes to bowl games and who is deserving of ranking and bowl game opponents etc. Conference strength can be useful no doubt, but also dangerous as well. Due to overall conference strength of the AAC, many were ready to hand Navy the NY6 game over WMU. That was insane and was further proven in their loss to Army yesterday. There is no doubt that the AAC has some great P5 teams of late, but I think the P5 conference teams always need to be looked at closely as individuals as well.
I would argue that,
over the past decade, there has been great parity between the the
top teams in the G5 conferences, even as these conferences have changed somewhat in their membership. Here is my reasoning...
- We can nitpick over each G5 conference's strength each year, and the Sun Belt is going to take it on the chin...sorry guys, and the AAC has built up the darling conference of late. I'll give credit where credit is due.
- There have also been some very bad G5 teams each year in each conference.
- There have been a couple very exceptional teams over this time period that have been a cut above the the typical G5 powerhouses. Boise State and Houston are probably the only two I would include in this upper category. WMU would need to beat Wisc this year to be included (note that NIU was not included, and I would also not count Miami over a decade ago with Roethlisberger, I am only including teams that have proven they can compete with top 10 teams consistently).
If we don't concentrate on the worst teams and also throw out the exceptional Boise and Houston teams, is there really much of a difference between the top powerhouse teams in the G5 over the past decade? Excluding the Houston and Boise "cut above" teams, let's think only about the other "select" teams over the years from So Fla, Memphis, Temple, Navy, Tulsa, Cincy, ECU, NIU, Toledo, BG, WMU, Ball St, Buffalo, Miami, Kent, WKU, LaTech, Marshall, Air Force, Fresno, Nevada, Utah St, SDSU, App St, Ark St, Ga So, Troy, ULL, and perhaps a couple more that I haven't thought of.
