American-BIGEAST Challenge
Tonight's UCONN/Cuse game was electric! I've been thinking for a few weeks now that we should formalize the American v. Big East rivalry into an ACC-Big10 type deal.

So far 2016:
Tulane @ St. John's
Providence @ Memphis
Villanova @ UCF

Still to play:
UCONN @ Georgetown
Temple v Depaul
Temple @ Villanova
Cincinnati @ Butler
Xavier @ Cincinnati

2015: Big East 5-1 American
2014: Big East 3-1 American
2013: Big East 3-0 American

Given the history of the Big East's collapse the rivalry would be REAL instantaneously. Instead of these early season games against Mercer and McNeese St I'd much rather have more games with big east schools. It's even a better sell than losing to Pac12 or most SEC schools because of the rivalry aspect, people who don't normally watch AAC would watch against BE.

BE would probably be game to partner up as it would mean more games on ESPN for them. Signing with Fox hasn't been pretty as far as ratings.

P.S. I know there's gonna be smack talk about Tulane's crappy basketball. There's nothing to say other than hopefully Dunleavy get's the players he wants for next year because this team will be among Tulane's all-time worst. I have become a full-time AAC fan this basketball season 04-rock

I kinda thought the UCONN - Syracuse game was more like carpet static. Yeah technically both electricity but the comparison ends there.

I agree but each year that goes by we're already playing them more often; 3, 4, 6, 8 games. They may have signed the much more lucrative TV deal but ESPN>FOX is helping us way more than they'd like to admit.

Listen to this spin:

Quote:Using a standard “average viewership per game” metric, this year’s Big East games on Fox and FS1 rate lower than mid-major conferences such as the Missouri Valley, Horizon and American Athletic.

Disaster, right?

Not necessarily. Fox and conference executives say the Big East’s total viewing on Fox this season — not average viewing — puts the conference among the power five conferences.

“If it were all about average viewership, we would just take our best 10 or 15 games, put them in the best time slots that we could, and we would be able to throw a number up that would be comparable to the biggest of the power five conferences,” said Mike Mulvihill, Fox Sports senior vice president of programming and research. “There’s not that much value in that for us, and there’s no value in that for the schools. A lot of the value in our relationship is to allow to schools to go out and recruit and saying that such a higher percentage than in any other conference of your games is going to be televised nationally.”
Fox’s Big East hoops ratings, by Mark Twain

Right now Aresco could earn his pay by coming to Big East diplomatically and offering them some help. The Big East was built by ESPN. There used to be the Big East-SEC AND the Big East-ACC challenge, which was the original inter-conference challenge. Play the history card, Big East boosters and fans will be very sympathetic.

For the AAC the theatrics and drama would bump numbers, hopefully getting a lot of would be WATCHESPN games on ESPN or ESPN2. Make our teams more visible and solidify our value before the next round of negotiations with ESPN. Also most importantly bump up our SOS and RPI.

Ugly for sure but ESPN is great at turning **** into gold. They love to play up the old Big East rivalries that were so lucrative for them. I wonder what the ratings for last night were, I'd bet way way higher than when UCONN played OKST (a much better team) a few Mondays ago.

They didn't spurn us. That sounds like something you big East boys used to do with each other. Gross

Not sure why. Playing in the best basketball league in the country was extremely fun. I have no ill will towards any of them.

RE: American-BIGEAST Challenge
Mountain West and MVC had one the other day and there was 0 buzz around it... Many didn't even know it was a thing so just having a challenge to have a challenge isn't the way to go on it. Would it help our schedule strength? I don't know I feel like the teams who want to schedule hard and already do well are playing the top of the Big East and so a challenge would really just get you all the fun we had when St. Johns went to Tulane

Man, I guess I misread this one. My thinking was that when someone disses you, especially in sports, you want to come back and beat the crap out of them. I know Tulane got crushed the other day but I truly believe the AAC will become a premier basketball conference. Right now BE is on top and AAC is down pretty much all around. But in just a couple years AAC could be on top and crushing BE. That's what makes a rivalry interesting, the losses make the wins that much sweeter.

We already play Villanova each year so the demand from my end isn't all that great to play the rest of them.. Xavier would be cool I guess

Temple with big win over Depaul.

American down 3-1.

Chance for another one with Cincinnati playing Butler currently. Cmon bearcats!

Considering this conference has never had more than 1 win against the Big East in a season every win is big. And it was close game late. A win over Depaul sounds better than a win over many good mid-major teams.
