RE: WKU Jeff Brohm takes the Purdue job...
Sucks that he is leaving, but I can't complain. He got paid (and mark my words, he will win at Purdue), and what he accomplished at WKU the past 3 seasons is amazing. Beat a ranked Marshall team his first year. Set a record for wins in a season (and had us ranked after the bowl game) in year 2. Hit double-digit wins again this year with a new QB and several players gone to the NFL/Graduation. We may fall off a cliff for a while as we lose the rest of our experienced skill players this year, but I think he recruited enough talent for us to keep winning with the right hire.

Winning at Indiana and Purdue is damn near impossible. Their isn't any recruiting base to draw from. Good luck to him. But he should have taken the Cincy job instead.

They've had 2 bad hires in a row, but Purdue certainly has the tools to win.

You've got that backwards. Hiring coaches that aren't very good is the rule not the exception. The aforementioned Tiller was one of their most successful, other than that no significant sustained success.

Every time a Big Ten team, or a SEC team, or a PAC team, etc. hires a head coach from a lower conference, it's a guy who won impressively at the lower level. It's a "genius offensive mind", or a "defensive guru", etc.

But obviously, as we all know, hardly every one of these guys works out.

I'd be curious to know, just what the average success rate is when "lower" teams in conferences like the Big Ten, PAC, SEC, etc. hire successful head coaches from the lower FBS conferences.

I'm sure there are some good examples.

But on the other hand ... Darrell Hazell went 11-3 at Kent State the year before he was hired by Purdue. Went 8-0 in the MAC, and lost the MAC CCG (to Northern Illinois, using Jerry Kill's players ...) in 2OT. Then lost the bowl game to Arkansas by only 4 pts (though not entirely sure if Hazell coached that game).

Hazell then went 1-11, 3-9, 2-10, and 3-3 at Purdue before being fired.

Keep in mind that there's a reason those jobs come open in the first place. In Hazell's case, it's tough to recruit big bullies to Purdue to play ball control when the toys are lacking compared to...even Rutgers and their newish stadium build up.

Just less tools than others in the conference. Besides, Drew Brees was a long time ago...and 13 other schools get Big 10 money, too.

Not so sure. Hazell did a solid job at Kent. Once again, Purdue sorely lacked any investment in the program until very recently and that facility won't be here for a little while. Can't recruit with nothing to dangle as a carrot. Purdue has always been a day late and many dollars short. Tiller called it quits at the right time. Seven wins with what Purdue put out was probably nothing short of a minor miracle.

Heck, even Houston's ace some years back was hoping locals would stay home despite playing at Robertson, which really didn't work out that well. Now? Not such a reach.

RE: WKU Jeff Brohm takes the Purdue job...
I think this is a pretty complete list of hires out of the MAC since 1995

Clear Successes - went to BCS games
Gary Pinkel - all time winingest coach at both Toledo and Missouri
Nick Saban spent 1 year at Toledo
Urban Meyer spent 2 years at Bowling Green
Brian Kelly (Central Michigan) at Cincinnati & Notre Dame

OK / Acceptable
Butch Jones (Central Michigan) at Cincinnati & Tennessee
Brady Hoke (from Ball State) did well at San Diego State for 2 years but then stunk at Michigan
Jim Grobe (from Ohio) went 77-82 at Wake Forest in 13 years before being let go
Terry Hoeppner (from Miami) went 9-14 in 2 years at Indiana before dying of brain cancer
Randy Walker (from Miami) went 37-45 in 7 seasons at Northwestern before dying of a heart attack

Flameouts
Hazell at Purdue (from Kent)
Turner Gil at Kansas (from Buffalo)
Ron Cooper at Louisville (from Eastern Michigan)
Michael Haywood (from Miami) was hired by Pitt, but then fired two weeks later for beating his wife
Dave Clawson (from Bowling Green) appears on his way to being fired at Wake Forest (12-24 in 3 years)
Tim Beckman (from Toledo) got fired from Illinois for abusing players. He was 12-25 at Illinois

Verdict uncertain:
Dino Babers is at Syracuse (from Bowling Green), went 4-8 this year
Matt Campbell is at Iowa State (from Toledo), went 3-9 this year

I'm not sure you can say this yet about Dave Clawson.

3 and 9, back to back years playing very young teams. In his 3rd year, with his juniors and sophomores, he gets Wake to 6 and 6 and a bowl game. Next year Wake should be poised to capitalize on how they have built things in Clawson's tenure so far. The offense should catch up to an always stout defense.

I'm really excited about Matt Campbell. I know 3-9 looks bad but if we still had Rhodes we probably would've gone 0-12 with the talent we had left. Campbell just pulled in our highest rated recruiting class and we had 14 freshman playing minutes this year. Looks like he will pull in another highest rated recruiting class this season too.

I hope we can help out his name in the clear success category in the future.

You can say that about any program not in Ohio, Florida, Texas or California.

Jeff can get the players. His skill players at WKU were either diamonds in the rough that he discovered or guys from Louisville that UofL or Kentucky didn't offer because they were deemed to small. Ace and Taywan are two examples. Few would disagree that those two could have played anywhere. Those are the kind of players Jeff will bring to West Lafayette.

Not to rain on your parade, but we've (Minnesota fans) heard that before.

Tim Brewster.

Couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Hopefully your guy isn't like that.

Looks like he was a successful coach at Toledo before getting the call up. So that certainly is a great thing, and something Brewster obviously didn't have.

Are the players who come to Wisconsin from other states "rejects"?

Just wondering.

Well s___ man, if you can win the conference and get a top 5 CFP ranking with "rejects", sign me up.

(that is what would've happened if Wisconsin had held on)

His new Athletic Director is Mike Bobinski. He's doomed. I hope you get that paper in the next 4-5 years Jeff, because your career is about to go into reverse.

$3.5M per year, right?

Plus you have this coming online:

Seems like an OK gig, to me.
