Realistic Expectations for 2017 Coastal Football
Someone asked the question on CoastalFans of how many wins we should expect to get next year and thought that it would be a good post over here. We seem to be pretty reserved, especially coming off of a season of playing 6 different quarterbacks and a 7th that was knocked out in pre-season. We'll only have 2 recruiting classes since announcing FBS and I don't think we'll be at full scholarships.

Here's our schedule for next year sorted by 2016 Sagarin rating.

*45 Arkansas
**50 Appalachian State
**78 Arkansas State
**79 Troy
**94 Idaho
**115 Georgia Southern
*131 Western Illinois
**143 Georgia State
*150 UMASS
**155 Louisiana-Monroe
**201 Texas State
*n/r UAB

* - 2017 out of conference opponents
** - 2017 conference opponents

So, realistically, how do you all think we'll do next year?

I think 5-7 or 6-6 would be as good a guess as any. I don't know much about a coastal yet but beating UMASS plus W Illinois and then taking out ULM, TXSt, and Ga State would put you at 5 wins right there

GaSo and App St were powerhouses in I-AA and came in on a weak year. I think the conference has gotten stronger so with Coastal coming in I have to go with 2-10.

I dont see much chance for a win. maybe over Idaho..TXST should be tired of losing and maybe a little better next year..uab will have too much at stake..so that leaves western illinois and idaho as best shots in my view..

So Coastal knows who they play in conference next year. Where do the rest of us find our SB opponents for 2017
?

We were in your shoes only a couple years ago wondering how we would fare in the FBS. The Cajun and Redwolf fans told us we might not win a single game and the GAST fans told us we don't even belong here. Then we won the conference, so I'm not counting coastal out at all.

I think it will help some to have consistency with the coaching staff. App took a very rare dip in the win column during the transition from Jerry Moore to Scott Satterfield. Coastal will deal with the step up in competition but not have to deal with a learning curve for the coaches' style of leadership, offense, defense, etc.

I expect Coastal to finish around fifth or sixth in the league.

I don't see why you couldn't get to 6 wins even 7.

It was posted on here somewhere, I'll see if I can find the post.

Here it is: http://csnbbs.com/thread-797444-post-137...id13761225

But I guess it is all subject to change until it is officially released.

I firmly believe ULM will be a bowl team next year. A good many JUCO adds already committed and another year in Viator's system. I have no idea how Coastal will do though. Not sure what they return.

Its anybody's guess. This conference has no juggernauts. You could win ot all or come in last. Look at idaho.

So, a combined score over the Panthers of 98-6 in our only 3 meetings doesn't qualify APP as a juggernaut ? 04-rock

Here's my view..You can't assume that you'll move quickly up to the FBS level. Its possible that you have a Ga Southern or App year, but its just as possible that you end up with a USA (who went 2-11 in their first FBS year) or a Texas State transitional year.

Assuming that depth will be a problem, you might find that you are really competitive in the first couple of quarters and then fade as the game moves into the second half.

You should be favored versus UAB and Western Illinois. UMass is a toss up. At this point, I think Texas State might be a toss up as well.

I think Viator is a good hire at ULM. I project them to be a bit tougher next year. Watch out for Georgia State. They were basically a decent team with some glaring deficiencies. They were better than their record.

I think you're looking at a baseline of 4 wins. Top end around 6 wins. Low result 2 wins.

Playing the top 4 SBC teams from 2016 plus a Georgia Southern that just has to be better than this year and Georgia State with a new staff, it's going to be tough.
