This guy nailed it. I wish I could say the same thing to Tech fans. The only time we fill our stadium is when we play an in-state school that brings a lot of fans. To be fair, we still break 20,000 (unless the game is on Thursday against the best team in the conference... kudos to the WKU fans they made the trip btw). Our highest attended home game this year was UTSA with 23,012. That's still about 5000 empty seats, and the only reason that game had the highest attendance was because it was homecoming, and after the court was presented at halftime the annual migration of the sorority girls (who wouldn't have otherwise came) out of the stadium took place.
If you want to know who your true fans are, do what Tech did in our opener and have lightning delay the game for 4 hours, all the while no one knows if there even will be a game because the game was already supposed to be at 6. Besides the ones who had to leave because they couldn't keep the kids up that late or had a baby sitter or a long drive home, etc., the true fans were those of us who stayed at the Joe until the game finally kicked off at or after 10 pm and didn't end until 1 AM.
This is my fourth year at Tech. I had to miss the Lamar game my freshman year due to family things, but I have been to every home game since, plus both bowl games (and I'm going to this one) and even made a road game this year (UNT). I have never left early. Not even the Southern Miss game last year, and you better believe I was tempted. But even when we lose, I don't leave until the alma mater is sung. When we win, I stick around to sing Hard to be Humble with the band.
There's another student I know that irritates me so much. I've mentioned him here before. He's from out of state, but he's an LSU fan. He wants us to win, obviously, but I seriously think he cares more about LSU than his own dang school. He once told me "Tech either blows out the other team or gets blown out. The games aren't as exciting." And while I understand blow outs aren't the most dramatic, I kind of like seeing my team dominate someone.
And to anyone who leaves early because of a blow out, the regular season Tech-WKU game is the perfect example of why you never leave the game early.
I guess this kind of thing frustrates people like us because we are so passionate about our teams, but some people are more casual about it. But if LSU can have over 100,000 every game, we should at least be able to fill our 28,019. I'm sure many of you feel the same way in your respective schools.
