It was a bad day for the AAC, because Navy's loss made WMU the G5 champion and cost us the Cotton Bowl, that sucks. We've now gotten the NY6 bid, which was supposed to be de facto ours when the CFP was set up, just one time in three years. That doesn't help our narrative about how much better we are as a conference than the other G5, because nationally, the Access bid is the most prominent indicator of that, even though in this case we clearly were the best G5 conference.
But it is definitely a tribute to Houston that big name coaches like Miles and Kiffin are interested in their job.
The acknowledgement by popular media that a 2 loss AAC team would have gotten in over an undefeated team, helps our narrative greatly. This weekend bolstered the conference even with Navy losing.
The positive talk on a national stage, which the AAC deserves by the way, about the overall depth and strength of the league coupled with Houston being mentioned along with the big names that are interested is positive across the board for the conference. It wasn't "Houston is interested in X,Y,and Z big name coaches." It was "X,Y,and Z big name coaches are interested in coaching at Houston." Big difference and good for them. I only wish ECU can built to that level.
I do agree with Quo that Navy not getting the Cotton berth hurts that silly P6 narrative though. Take care of business on the field and there is no need for such gimmicks.
A 2 loss Boise made it to the Access Bowl in 2014. And a 2 loss Houston, Boise and maybe Navy would've made it this year if they won their conferences.
Cheers!

IMO, it hurts even worse this year, because let's face it: This year the Access Bowl is the Cotton Bowl, and the Cotton is just way more prestigious than the Peach Bowl. The Cotton has a long and venerable history, historically it was one of the Big 4 NY Day bowls whereas the Peach is a manufactured "major" bowl.
And, you can't beat Jerry World as a setting either. So it really would have been cool to get the Access slot this year.

It's definitely a better job than Oregon. Listen to Frost talk about why he left Oregon to come to UCF. Try and convince a SoCal, Texas, or FL kid to come up to Oregon. Its a tough sell, it doesn't matter how how cool the unis are or how nice the facilities are.
Plus UH fanbase will survive not making a bowl game next year, if that happens. Oregon's booster (singular on purpose) will be calling for their coaches head if they're not competing for a conference championship next year.

mmmmmmm........sorry, but Houston is not a better job than Oregon. Houston is a better job than half the Big 12, some of the SEC, and a handful of Pac 12 programs, but Oregon is not one of them.

Nonsense. The NY6 is the NY6, period. What they were historically before the system was implemented is irrelevant, and this is from a fan whose school has been to multiple Cotton Bowls.

It must be eating you up to see respected members of the national media make that comparison with a straight face.
So, who is the early front runner in Cincy? I hear Neal Brown from Troy has the inside track.

Good counterpoint.
Frost and Chip Kelly, both immediately came out and said they're not interested. Those are two guys who were successful there and familiar with the job.

We will finish as the top G5 conference 2 out of the 3 years. We also are the only conference to finish with multiple ranked teams---and we had more teams ranked during the year than any other conference. You're right though, Navy missed a big chance. A 2 loss Navy jumping an undefeated MAC champ would have been a very big statement.

Wishful thinking. There's no denying that the Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton are just much better known and more prestigious than the Fiesta and, especially, the Peach Bowl, which historically has never been a major.
Slapping an NY6 label on the Peach doesn't erase all of that knowledge and history.

If you can continue to feed coaches to major programs then it's attractive .ie Cincinnati. When that stops, you are in trouble. Me thinks that Houston has figured out a sustainable long term game plan.

Coaches don't stay long anywhere these days, doesn't matter what level. Its important that schools have administrations that know how to make good hires. At the very least, UH has proven it can do that much.

Really, how is providing a 50%+ subsidy to the athletics budget considered a sustainable long term plan. Even the UH president doesn't believe that. And BTW, both UConn & UC are on the same subsidy track.

I think he meant for being competitive (i.e hire the best up and coming coach and recruit locally). Obviously our spending can't continue at this rate, but many of our expenditures were long over do (like TDECU) and won't be regular occurrences. If we stay competitive in this league, attendance will stay up, and eventually the programs revenue's will increase.
