The older we get, the better we were.

What's sad about this thread is it just re-opens some bad wounds for USM fans while all reaffirming some upsetting facts.

Bad wounds: we got left out of re-alignment and most importantly we decided to make THE worst coaching hire (Ellis Johnson) in the history of college football at THE most crucial turning point in college football history (2012).

Fact: we (or anyone for that matter) play/recruit to our competition...

Thats what it really comes down to TTT, Southern Miss got left out. I know it's got be disappointing. Tech got left out of CUSA 2.0 in 2005.

The year reference Tech lost to Southern Miss by 2 and Houston came back from 34-7 to win by 1. The next year Tech went on to beat Houston. Those teams were good but not that much better than the top teams in current CUSA. The WAC was just as competitive as CUSA 2.0 and more so on the national stage. There were some terrible SMU, Tulsa, Tulane teams during that era that would rival the current dregs of CUSA.

We played both teams during that era and WKU the last two years so I think Tech fans have a unique perspective to make an informed opinion and Houston was nowhere close to #7th in the country that year. But overall CUSA 2.0 is stronger than current CUSA, that we can agree on.

Add in the former Big East schools and Navy, makes AAC stronger for sure. Those two teams played in the AAC champ yesterday not a CUSA 2.0 team. Tech played the top teams from CUSA 2.0 and those teams never really impressed me. Certainly not as good as some of the Boise teams Tech played in the WAC. Just my opinion

BTW Tech and WKU had just as many draft picks last year as the great Houston team from last year. There is not that much difference in the talent level

Take these teams in Current CUSA:

WKU
La Tech
Southern Miss
Marshall
Rice
Utep
UAB
Middle Tennessee

Then add:

Troy
Arkansas State
App State
ULL

And that overall lineup would be better than the current status of CUSA.

So you want to get rid of all the east cost schools but keep one so far out west that no fan can travel to? Not to mention that team can't win in either of the two major sports.

A lot of the schools on that list had 40+ years to build a program and they are not too far (if at all) over those east coast schools you want to leave out.

Five years from now at the rate of growth...they might just fly pass those 40, 50, 60 year old programs that wins once every five years

I don't want to be with any directional schools except maybe ECU.

Yep - Boise was far better than any team CUSA 2.0 could field. Of course we only beat them 1 time while in the WAC 03-banghead

Maybe swap GSU for ULL - think they will have a better FB program going forward

No, hatred of other directional schools. Time was, USM was the only directional major, and that was good.
