The case is still pending. UNC responded to the NOA from the NCAA in August. The NCAA has 60 days to respond/schedule a hearing with the Committee of Infractions.
Like the OM case, this won't be resolved until 2017.
BTW, I just googled this to get the latest updates. I found there's a Wiki page on it. Opened the wiki page and read the section on possible NCAA punishment. The wiki description says this:
The National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA, a non-profit that regulates college-level athletics, is an important institution in the scandal. In the past, the NCAA has sanctioned institutions such as Florida State University and the University of Memphis for improprieties, which included ghostwritten term papers and tests and other academic fraud.
What the heck?! I tried removing the UofM from that, but wiki won't let me. So it's us and Florida State as the examples of NCAA renegades. I'm putting this on the main page, too - because it's so unbelievable.
In the case with UNC (or any of the blue bloods) there might be some liability, but it just isn't strict. NCAA also seems to drag their feet on the major schools but seem to move quickly on lesser institutions. In response to the Memphis debacle of 2007/08 the NCAA response was "Where is the risk if there is no significant penalty when things go awry? If the IAC sets aside the penalties in this case, it would send the message that an institution can take chances, even with knowledge of potential infractions problems, with impunity," the infractions committee said. Although the NCAA has handed out heavy sanctions to some schools like Kentucky, USC, SMU, and several others in the past, it was because the violations were just blatant and could not be "swept under the carpet." Double standards are obvious and will continue until some higher authority holds the NCAA accountable. As for the UNC decision:
Duke had a player admit multiple times on camera that he was paid. When asked if he would be available for an investigation and he said yes. The NCAA has NEVER done anything about it!!!
If UNC gets more than a slap on the wrist, if that... I will be shocked!
