Unofficial MBB Bye Week Thread
Not much to talk about although I think Baylee Steele should get some kudos for his play over the last three games.
He is averaging almost 8 ppg the last 3 games. He is a 'low volume' shooter but is shooting an extremely high percentage (at least over the last 3 games).
And, once again, we need to remember there is but one ball and a lot of players who can shoot it (Lee, Mangum, JT4, etc.). Steele does not need to be a go to guy.

He may need to increase that volume a tad. I think our problem at the 5 is defensive, but generating more consistent offense at that spot would be nice. Madray may come Amon eventually, but he doesn't look like comfortable at the 5 yet. LWH is more of a true 4, who has a decent jump shot but also doesn't look great down low with the ball.

I agree Frank.
Steele and JT4 are naturals at the '5' spot.
I do believe that both Madray and LWH are playing out of position for reasons. Don't know much about LWH, but I think Madray is a natural stretch 4.
OTOH, come January, the best bigs might be JT4 and Steele so they may play together, in a dual low post offense.
I could see when JT4 goes to the bench, that Steele plays center and Madray or LWH plays the '4'. Steele could shoot more and Madray could shoot the 3-ball as a stretch-4.

RE: Unofficial MBB Bye Week Thread
We have 5 guys that we can consider "scorers". Everything else is icing on the cake. If Steele can get me 6-8 points a game, we will be just fine. Nobles looked more assertive at times against UofD too. I hope he begins to be more comfortable, because I love his skill set.
When our rotation inevitably shrinks to 7 or 8 come MAC play, I think it'll be Steele and Nobles getting those last rotation spots. Madray or LWH will get in if there's foul trouble.

Steve,
You make a good point on Steele and I know what you are trying to say. My thought is Steele is improving but if we want to move into a top 3 MAC team, Steele must keep improving his footwork and speed. If he is left open in the post, and we are cold from outside then we need to be confident he can score consistently inside.
Also when Steele is playing in the post, can JT4 hit an 8-15foot jump shot consistently. JT4 needs to develop a mid range game if he wants to play in the league.
Go EMU!

Slightly OT, but Omaha just beat Iowa in Iowa City. Makes our win look a little better.

Wow!!! (BTW, I just checked the money line: Omaha was 7:2 underdog to beat Iowa (put down $20 to win $70 returning $90.).
And IUPUI came back to take it to Ball State (IUPUI owns the MAC this year).

RE: Unofficial MBB Bye Week Thread
the big man situation is funky for all the reasons you all have described.
JTIV - is he playing the baseline on defense because Murphy wants to limit his fouls or because JTIV wants to show NBA scouts that he has range on defense? either way, it's not a good fit. i would love to see him back in the middle, and i would love to see him spend more time as the sole big in the paint. things get clogged when he's down there with Madray or Steele.
Madray - i assume he's in the middle solely because JTIV is not. but why have him play in the paint on offense? things get way too clogged, he isn't strong enough with the ball to be helpful offensively down there, and he allegedly has a great 3 point shot. why not let him shoot from out there?
Steele - good touch on offense out to at least 10 feet. needs to keep his feet on the ground on offense. that, plus unnecessary reaching, gets him in foul trouble. he runs the floor well by MAC bigman standards. i think he'll be serviceable for the rest of this year and a good mac player the next two years.
LWH - i haven't seen him play enough to have a solid opinion.

RE: Unofficial MBB Bye Week Thread
Aaron, I have to imagine it is strictly to keep him out of foul trouble. He's not overmatched on the wing, like he is sometimes in the middle. Personally, I don't think he's a particularly good defender at either spot, but that's what we have to live with because of how good he is offensively. I prefer Baylee in the middle in our "optimal" defensive lineup.
The last few years made me appreciate just how great of a defensive player that DaShonte Riley was. We haven't come close to being an interior force defensively ever since he left.
im curious to see how we look with Minnie next year, assuming JT is back. Minnie put up some impressive defensive numbers at Robert Morris. I think we will improve on that end.

RE: Unofficial MBB Bye Week Thread
Just checked Sagarin's, my preferred computer ranking. Thought some of you guys might find interesting...
EMU is ranked 111 out of 351. This puts them third in MAC behind Akron (89) and Ohio (93).
Their 6 OOC opponents so far are ranked as follows
48 SMU
68 Pitt
141 Omaha
149 IUPUI
211 Gardner Webb
305 Detroit
Remaining 3 OOC opponents
104 Vermount
28 Syracuse
195 Long Beach State

According to Sagarin's Iowa is ranked 124. So with Omaha at 141 and on the road, definitely an upset though not a major one. But point well taken nonetheless, this is a good sign for EMU.

Very good points, guys, and yes, Riley, was in a league of his own defensively.
I'd love to see him on this team with all of the offensive weapons around him. Let him ave. 7 ppg on two dunks + 3 FTs, but get 3 or 4 blocks per game.

I'll be interested to hear if Coach Castro continues to harp on the fact they won't be playing zone defense. He talked about it during his press conference and again at the preseason basketball event at the Convo.

crazy it is December and everyone is excited about EMU FB...
On hoops, though, I understand that CMU has a shooter who flats out light it up.
Marcus Keene had 40 points last night vs. WI-Green Bay. He is averaging over 30 ppg and 44% behind the arc.

CMU always has shooters. It has caused some real problems for Murphy's zone during his tenure. I remember a couple of years ago they lit us up for about 15 threes. It was one of those times that watching Murphy continue to play the zone was frustrating.
In terms of thoughts about bigs. Steele is developing quickly. His comfort from day 1 to now is incredible. He belongs at the 5. While I think Thompson has always played the 5, his weight disadvantages him and we have seen big 5's give him trouble throughout last year. Steele's pure size gives us an advantage. I've not been impressed in the least with Madray.
