RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
I grew up in Gloucester and went to high school with Spencer's dad. He's a VERY good prospect--regardless what position he plays. Gloucester has historically been terrible at football. Most seasons they only have one win. Spencer almost singlehandedly made them competitive this year in one of the nation's toughest conferences.

RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
Would he redshirt next year, then ideally compete for QB2 spot until the Williams era comes to a close after 2020 season?

I would hope so. I would get worried if we keep starting Fresh or RSFresh QBs.

This sounds ideal to me. Spencer would be starting his junior year unless he's so awesome he unseats Williams. At 6'5" I like his height too.

Should be interesting to see how many QBs return next year. I can imagine a scenario where Williams is the only returner.

RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
We may have gotten a steal. His stats don't necessarily jump off the page because of his supporting cast. I think if you put him on Hampton or Phoebus' roster, he'd be a 3-4 star prospect. He's raw, but SUPER athletic and has all the measurables big-time programs are looking for.

I definitely think he's got to redshirt. He'll need a year or two to clean up his mechanics. By the time he's a Junior, he could be a stud QB for us.

Talked with a family member, BL is staying. He bleeds ODU. His future is coaching, you can see it on the sidelines when SW comes off the field BL is right beside Whitcomb. I've heard he helps direct SW and the other QBs off the field in day to day life.

My opinion is he is fine with his role as a back up, I hope to see him become the holder on field goals it'll give us an option if we ever need a fake.

If the taunting of ODU coaches in facebook and vapilot comment section by one of the mothers of a QB is an indication then one of the QBs will be flying back home after the semester ends. Not sure if it was the mother or a friend of the family of the QB but someone with the same ideas called in to one of the coaches shows asking Wilder why he didnt play a statistically talented QB on the bench. Ted and Wilder kinda just danced around the question and acting like they didnt hear the question clearly.

RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
I can appreciate the angst of the parent of a player for whom things didn't work out. He/she has a vested interest. I would hope no one else would fall for the story that, somehow, the player didn't get a fair shake, because it generally makes no sense. I've been around a lot of teams and coaches would play Jimmye Laycock's mother at QB if they thought she'd help them win games. Maybe coming in late hurt this player worse than could have been imagined, but it's obvious the plan was to redshirt SW if at all possible. From practice every day to games, no one showed enough to make that a possibility.

RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
On day 1, people posted on this board that Steven Williams was the best QB on the roster. I blew it off and hoped he redshirted. Each of the QBs were given a chance whether through practice (or in Hoy/BLs case, the first 2.5 games) and they did not show to be superior QBs.

I was also on the "RS Williams" crew. It looks like burning his redshirt is going to be a gamble that pays off down the line; it gives Spencer that RS year to acclimate and then +2 to ease himself into the starting spot as backup and understudy if he pans out.

This is great to hear. You have to think when he took a walk on spot, he wasn't expecting to play much. He did parlay that into a scholarship and real playing time. He seems like a great kid and he gives us a really capable back up. I do feel like he could easily leave for a starter spot on an FCS team, so glad to hear he wants to stay.

RE: Football Recruiting: 2018
Yesterday was GIS day and my work always does short little presentations that aren't work related. I decided to map out our 2018 commits and roster to see where most of our players come from. Here is the interactive map. You can turn layers on and off from the list in the top. You can click the logo and it takes you to ODUs roster web page. I used the ESPN roster because it involved the least amount of editing to get in a usable spreadsheet. I may use the ODU site to go back and do the previous rosters as well. The recruits layer is only commits listed on 247sports. You can click the points and it will bring up the player's info.

Nice! Our gis dept did a bunch of stuff yesterday too. I hadn't thought of putting recruiting data into a map, good job.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

Wow, the heatmap really shows a lot of activity in the 757. I didn't realize we had so many local guys. Nice job! Very cool

That's what led me to look at it. Seems like people say we don't recruit the 757 well but the heat map says otherwise. Also predictable are the hot spots in Richmond and DC. I wish I could get a breakdown of scholarship vs non scholarship to see if walkons play a roll. Also would be cool to do it for the roster of all seasons to see if this is the norm or if there are any patterns. I may do that when I have time.

Shows me we get our football players largely from the same places we get our students. Thats not a bad thing as long as they are high enough quality players to be a winning program.
