Most kids want to go away for school but convenient enough for family to come watch them play. I dont think it's much more complicated than that. Good news for us, in regards to G5 level talent, there isnt a ton of FBS schools between Jersey and ODU.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Football Recruiting Den
IMO, I think we need to work harder to engage, cooperation, have a warmth, friendliness, sales Job, nurturing for recruiting local Coaches along with players in the 757.

I notice a lot of 757 players never get a look or offer from ODU yet, I see them on JMU's, ECU, Richmond, FIU, FAU, Marshall, WKU, MTS, William and Mary, Bowling Green, and others as targets. Sadly they are from schools in our back yard. ie.... Norview, Western Branch, Great Bridge, Kempsville, Bishop Sullivan and even Oscar Smith. Not sure if it is because Wilder is going for position recruits or more of a system to fill in the slots. Usually they have other FBS offers from Conference mates, and have FBS size and often even rated. There are times we may offer, but they don't seem to have much interest in Old Dominion and they will go to what I perceive as a lower tier FBS G5 School. That to me is a head scratcher.

Just my perception and I have no great inside info on what they are doing. I make this observation purely because I feel in the future we can grow and soar as we make our bread and butter off local recruits. If we could create an inside recruiting tract that would have Coaches selling ODU and local players wanting to stay here, It could serve us well in the future. Maybe the new Stadium will be the magic bullet to make us more visible to locals and create a stronger desire or even a stronger presence to encourage them to stay home. Yes, I know winning will also be key.

Just my 2 cent on a slow Friday.

I think we could be in the running for a few of these recruits

*1). Kendrick Gillespie Memphis, TN (Craigmont)
All Purpose Back Ht 5-7 Wt 170
CLASS OF 18
Positions: RB
Height & Weight: 5'7" 170lbs
40 Yard Dash: 4.5
Shuttle: 4.32
Vertical: 31
Bench: 320
185 Bench (Reps): 21

247 link... http://247sports.com/player/kendrick-gillespie-46042643

Size will limit his P5 offers I think he may not be a strong target for the Monarchs, only because we currently have 10 RB on our roster.

HUDL Highlights.... http://www.hudl.com/video/3/4410259/5721...7e74a34dd6

*2). Donovan Jennings Tampa, FL (Gaither)
Offensive Tackle Ht 6-5 Wt 310
CLASS OF 18

Definitely a target for ODU, I think UVA & UCF, are among his top picks. I would think against a Florida School our beach location becomes a wash. Those two may be our strongest competition for this player. Would love to see us get him We really need players his size and at this position.

*4). Elijah Trent , Rockville MD (Thomas S. Wootton)
Wide Receiver Ht 6-3 Wt 180
CLASS OF 18

Not sure where he is on ODU's radar, but he will be a good addition for any program. I hope he selects us. I do believe there has been mutual interest in the past. We have done well with WR and it appears there is on-going contact. Great size and I think his recruitment will increase in the fall. For that reason, If he is a Target I hope he pulls the trigger on ODU. I think he would be a good recruit for us. b]

WR, Elijah Trent, Rockville (Md.) Thomas Wootton
More schools should stop by to check out Trent after his performance. He is long and needs to add strength, but he was quick off of the line of scrimmage, and he located the ball well coming out of his breaks. He was open a lot, and his size and athleticism make him a prospect ready to take the next step in his recruitment. Old Dominion, Robert Morris, Charlotte and Buffalo offered.

Just a footnote about Robert Mayo.....

2016 Virginia and Maryland commits, ACC, Big Ten, SEC targets comprise our list of top surprises at the Washington (D.C.) The Opening Regional

]WR, Robert Mayo, South Riding (Va.) Freedom
Mayo's size and physicality were too much for most defensive backs. He also ran good routes and did a nice job creating separation. Mayo was also very aggressive, attacked the ball in the air and showed strong hands. Maryland leads, but NC State, Wake Forest and Old Dominion are also in pursuit.

I think it actually stretches up to the Phily/Southern half of NJ area. Seems like from there down to the DMV is our sweet spot. We're able to beat out Maryland, Rutgers and Temple for quality guys from that region every year.

Another reason why the AAC is a much better fit for us.

Why would he go to Michigan State over Temple? Sheez.

In this recruiting class plus walk-ons, we've got a kid from Grassfield, 2 from Tallwood, one from Bethel, so +/-15% from 757, plus 3 from 804 and I think 5 from 'DMV'.

Donta Anthony looks like a great addition. At 6'5" and 215 lbs, he has good size with room to fill out even more. The Hudl video shows he has great hands, and as open as he seemed to be, you have to believe he can run good routes. Believe it or not, if you check out his sophomore video at the bottom of his hudl page, he even played some creditable quarterback his sophomore year -- very athletic. I expect good things out of this young man.

Aggie, what do you think he may be rated. IMO if he is not a 3 star with his size, athleticism, versatility, and speed than they must be looking at someone else. Good film on him and I think he will be a big asset for the program.

Looking forward to seeing him in Monarch Blue, Welcome to Monarch Nation.

Cox maybe (So) Gemonta Jackson and maybe even (Fr) Casey Perkins, he was a highly touted recruit. I'm sure he will red-shirt this year but should be in the mix.

Roster 7/23/17
26 Justin Cooper RB 5-11 203 Jr. Chester, Va. (Thomas Dale)
35 Jeremy Cox RB 5-11 208 Jr. Hope Mills, N.C. (Fork Union) (South View)
28 Malik Fuller RB 5-9 173 Jr. Nokesville, Va. (Fork Union) (Patriot)
27 Gemonta Jackson RB 5-10 191 So. Petersburg, Va. (Petersburg)
29 Lamar Lucas RB 5-11 215 Fr. Colonial Beach, Va. (Colonial Beach)
20 Casey Perkins RB 6-0 215 Fr. Smyrna, Tenn. (Smyrna)
22 Brandon Sinclair RB 5-10 205 RFr. Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Myrtle Beach)

Welcome aboard Mr.Anthony!

Hard to say. Personally, I believe he is clearly a three-star quality recruit. However, based on experience, with the offers he has and the fact that he is not already rated, I would not be surprised to see him come in as a mid-to-high two star. (That's on 247Sports.)

I love that one highlight when he lowers his head and completely runs over the defensive back. Pure BEAST!
