MT is the preferred abbreviation and what the athletic department uses most of the time. MTSU is the institutional name but not officially used for athletics - MT, Middle Tennessee are preferred.

To be more specific, there has been a push since the mid-90's to change the name to the University of Middle Tennessee to bring it more modern with the what the university has actually become to include its nationally recognized academic offerings.

It has been fought tooth and nail by other sister institutions within the state. The former President had to eventually pull the request in 1998 and the current President has ignored the pleas from students and alumni, because he's a ***** and is scared to fight for it.

Here's something for you to look into. You're going to need it...

Just so you know, TIBL, "MTSUBBS" would not remain the name. We would choose a "real" name for the forum that doesn't use MTSU or anything.
