Exclamation CUSA FB Championship Game
LaTech at WKU tied at 24 just into the 2Q.

Makes you wonder how a team would do in CUSA that could play defense. It certainly would be something the other league teams don't regularly see.

A few seconds later WKU goes back up 31-24 with 10 minutes to play in the 2Q. LaTech's turn coming up.

Somehow LaTech did manage one punt in this game.

Other way of looking at it: Top CUSA offenses can score on almost any of the conference's defenses. How can our offense be configured to keep up?

Doing what everybody else does hasn't and won't work for Rice.

WKU wins (outlasts?) La Tech 58-44. 1163 yards of offense. Great job defenses!

Interesting side note - LaTech had 5 yards rushing offense (502 passing). WKU more balanced 235 rushing and 421 passing.

Probably worth pointing out that we had a run of 15 conference games (culminated with the title game in 2013) in which we held the opponents to 28 or fewer 13/15 times. We had a pretty potent offense too, but a pretty stout defense as well. I'd argue that was the key to our championship that year.

Definitely agree. Three NFL players on that defense, plus some very quality other players (Kutzler was second team all conference at LB and I think a couple guys were honorable mention). Special teams had Boz plus Gillette at long snapper, both all conference guys too. The talent on 2013 was incredible compared to whatever has been on the field at Rice Stadium the last two years.
