The Pfeiffer Falcons were a middling D-II team last season, but it seems they decided to make their last year in D-II their best, if early returns are any indication. In their 6 wins this season, the Falcons have
averaged 106.8 points per game, with an average margin of victory of +25.8. They've been even more dominant when you look at conference-only games, beating Southern Wesleyan 123-85 and Mount Olive 125-81 to start play in Conference Carolinas.
When looking at the stat sheet for Pfeiffer, what immediately explains why the Falcons are able to get up and down the court (they've attempted 80.0 shots per game...UNCW averages 65.0) is that they have a roster of 19 players, and Head Coach Jeremy Currier has used every single one of his available bodies this year. Senior guards
AJ Clark and
Andrew Guerrero are the only 2 of the 19 who have averaged more than 20 minutes per game. 7 others fall in the 10-19 minute range, and another 7 average at least 4 minutes. Thus, it seems that the Falcons tend to use a "hockey line shift" type of mentality all game, shuttling players in and out.
Leading the Falcons in scoring is Junior point guard
Josh Calhoun, at 17.0 ppg. He's also shooting a healthy .424 from beyond the arc and .848 from the line. Clark (15.5 ppg) and Guerrero (14.5 ppg) follow Calhoun in the scoring department, and Senior guard
Mike Smith (13.8 ppg) rounds out a quartet of Falcons averaging double figures.
It's safe to say this will be a high scoring affair, even if UNCW wins in a rout.
