Basketball vs South Al
37-32 USA at the half. Eagles battled back late.

Jags with 8 3-pointers and Eagles with 1. Doesn't matter the year or the coach, just cant seem to defend the 3.

As tough as it can be to gauge most teams this early, damn, Vegas was AWFULLY optimistic given our comparative track records. Neither team has really played anybody, but USA's beaten the tar out of all but one of their cream puffs while we...well, not so much.

I see Price is still missing from the stat sheet. Anybody got the scoop on when he might be back?

23 point loss to a Belter, albeit an always competitive one. I notice Doc's opponents regularly make more treys than his teams' take, similar to a lot of Bower's team running 6 yard routes on 3rd and 9.

Maths be no good at USM.

I guess this is another wasted year of basketball. When are we actually going to start caring about this sport?

When Wee Willy McGilicutty realizes that Otis Campbell is no basketball coach.

next year when the other transfers hit the floor....

we knew this year was another throwaway season...

nastybunch made a great point in another thread.....the DT fiasco was probably worse than the E12L year....

it's been a roller coaster ride for southern miss athletics over the last 5 years....

Yep, the sanctions weren't even finalized until April of this year, which was what, 5 months before practice started? You can't sign anybody worth a damn when your sales pitch is, "I don't know if you'll actually be allowed to play a post-season game before your leave here or how many scholarships we'll have to get you some teammates, but we'd really like you to come."

The only reasonable expectation for this year is to be better than last year, and right now, they're having to try to do that without their best point guard. If next year's starting 5 are losing by 20+ to USA, I'll grab my torch and join the angry mob, but not yet.

Doc said postgame last night that it would be "later rather than sooner" when Khari returns. I'm beginning to wonder if he will be able to play at all this year.

USA went on the road and beat UNLV. Haven't checked on UNLV's record this year. But most years that's a quality win. Thought USA looked good. Might win the Belt.

UNLV is bad. They have only a few scholarship players. Dave Rice left that program in shambles.

RE: Basketball vs South Al
UNLV won 18 games last year in a pretty good league and they are 5-2 so far this year. They may not be typical UNLV or even good. But I would hardly call that "in shambles". It would be like us going to Memphis and winning. Yes they are down and not a top 20 program right now but it's still impressive for a program like ours.

But anyway the original point was I thought USA looked pretty good and will probably win about 20-23 games. Not saying they are world beaters but this "Doc got blown out by a sun belt team" is kind of misleading. They look to be a pretty darn good Belt team.

With that said, I am still not convinced one way or the other if Doc is the right guy. I've been to probably 20 games since he's been here and I think the guy can coach the Xs and Os really well. I will say that he needs an assistant or someone in the program to bring energy because he's not the most vibrant guy around. I have no clue whether or not we currently have that. But mostly it's going to come down to recruiting.

Right now I would say we have 2 definite pieces that can be on a good D-1 team, Rowe and Cortez Edwards. I've heard Conley, who I assume is redshirting, and the 2 transfers sitting out, have the talent to be really good players. Conley just needs to gain some weight and adjust to the D-1 game but he's long and a great athlete. So next year that should be 4-5 solid D-1 talents which is several more than this year. I also think Eddie Davis can be a solid role player and I think he's classified as a freshman again. Out of the guys we lose after this, only Price will really leave much of a hole, but supposedly the Griffin kid that is sitting out could be better than him. I have no idea why Ramey ever plays, kid just isn't a D-1 athlete, so losing him doesn't hurt at all. Watts is one of our better players, but honestly is just a below average guy for most of D-1, so not a huge loss there. Same for Campbell, one of our better guys, but for even a solid C-USA team, he'd struggle to get playing time.

Basically, we have very little talent. But we are slowly improving. This years team would be a lot better than last years if Price was playing, and next year should be the biggest improvement under Doc. Will it be enough for him to stay around ? I don't know and don't have that much of an opinion either way.

I've watched every game. I see NO evidence of this whatsoever. I made my mind up last year.

No set pieces on out of bounds plays. Defense is 90% man-to-man. No plays to create iso's. All I see is a bunch of semi-talented kids passing around the arc, throwing it up and hoping it goes in.
