PJ was, is and will always be a part of NIU FB.

I remember when PJ was the NIU OC for a single day and then turned his back on us. Probably didn't happen IN huskie stadium, but it was near it.

I've come over to wanting to see WMU and PJ get there. The Criminal Fradulent Playoff committee has swung me over

Good for you Maddawg! Most of us NIU fans will be rowing the boat this year in Detroit! NIU FB supports PJ and wishes him good Luck!
Would make a great sign.
Wish we could get an NIU fan contingent to goto Detroit and raise an NIU supports PJ banner!

No! It's not rowing. It's just like voting for the lesser of two evils like this past election There will be no rowing Won't even be near the water. I just want to see the committee beat down

In DeKalb, it is very hard to row a boat, as the rivers are just not deep enough.
One has to drive to Rockford, or Lake Michigan!

I also do not trust the Committee.

If you do, please enlighten the rest of us. Without any inside info it appears to be the act of an incredibly selfish, unethical person.

If there is any truth to this, what a shame. Cost NIU an extended string of dominance. To be fair, PJs current offense would have been bad for that team, but still.

I've always said this, PJ is a goober and is odd, but he's always a Huskie. He's also Uber successful as an individual. Any person that wore the cardinal and black I root for. Nothing but success unless he plays NIU.

Not sure what really happened there. I know what was said for public consumption but this might have had as much to do with Dave Doeren as with PJ. I always suspected they were oil and water and decided the relationship just would not work.

Thanks, definitely provides a different perspective than the version that came from NIU. Not sure which is true ( probably somewhere in the middle, like most things). If it is true shame on everyone involved for not identifying something like that in the interview process.

Agree.
PJ was not a good fit for Dave Doeren. He is an individual who likes to march to his own drum beat and would have been a lousy fit for Dave Doeren.
He has never bad mouthed NIU or NIU FB and has had only good things to say about NIU FB.
He never screwed NIU.

Blaming PJ for leaving a bad fit at NIU for the NFL is plain ignorant.

It's defamatory against one of NIU's greatest modern FB players who despite his 5 ft 10 height and modest background overcame great odds at NIU, was drafted in the NFL and at WMU.

PJ exemplifies many of the best NIU traits.
Persistence
Blue collar work ethic.
Success through very hard work.

Bad mouthing a suma *** Laude NIU graduate , who has brought only positive publicity for NIU and NIU FB is just plain stupid.

Grow up and ," Row the boat".

Just because PJ is in Josh Haldie's words, "an odd Duck.. He is still a 100% NIU and should be supported as such unless NIU plays against WMU."

Dave Doreren has publically stated according to the Northern Star that he has nothing against PJ.

It might be time for certain posters to realize that PJ's success on the football field translates into free NIU FB positive press. Something we badly need to help our recruiting.

Tommorrow night , I predict that the vast majority of NIU fans will be watching WMU
Either live or by tape.
He is associated with the magic breakout 2002 and 2003 FB teams of coach Novak.
Finally he is associated with perhaps the greatest moment of NIU FB in DeKalb.

The TD catch that gave NIU FB its best win over the highest ranked team in NIU FB history at Huskie Stadium in front of a record audience of over 28 000 fans.

Stadium was packed to capacity and students even sold there tickets to non-students for record sums.

It is unlikely that a team ranked #15 or higher will ever come to DeKalb again.

This moment should be treasured by very NIU FB fan.

This moment should be treasured by the NIU fan? What the hell are u talking about? Other than the monetary gain of $550,000 how does WMU's success directly help NIU? If I am a highly ranked prospect I'm not going say "hey look at how amazing WMU is, that coach is outstanding, maybe I should play for NIU" I'm sure the rise of western Michigan had absolutely nothing to do with the success of NIU and everything to do with a coach that could recruit. Give me a break.

RE: I'm rooting for PJ
When over 40 000 mostly WMU fans are seated in Detroit Stadium infront of a National Televised audience, NIU will receive plenty of free positive publicity.

Hopefully many NIU FB fans will watch and cheer for the NIU FB player who , " caught the OT TD against #15 Maryland in DeKalb infront of a Nationally televised audience giving NIU FB its most memorable win...and causing Joe Novak to clench his fists in public for the first time".

In a strange and meaningful way this might be a repeat of 2013 when NIU was 12-0 and 1 win away from a second trip to a Major Bowl.

If only this would have happened!

3 years later another MAC major Bowl team invite is again on the line with the Millions of $ of positive publicity and huge cash inflow into our FB program.
This time it is not NIU directly playing for the MAC or NIU directly looking to play the spoiler.
It's NIU's PJ Fleck who was moulded by NIU Coach Joe Novak and joined an NIU FB team (with a 3 year record 8- 36 which had not long ago broke the longest losing streak in the NCAAF.)
PJ, with Doug Free, Michael Turner and an incredible FB class went 6-5; 6-5; 8-4 and 10-2 with three ranked wins and several weeks of NIU FB team being ranked Nationally. The highest rating was #12. Best ranking in NIU FB history so far.

PJ like so many NIU graduates had to find fame and fortune outside of DeKalb. ( A very tough concept for some die hard NIU FB fans to grasp).

Yes. There is a life outside of DeKalb Il.

Everyone likes an amazing success story against seemingly impossible odds, even if it happens outside of DeKalb IL.

NIU's PJ was the youngest head coach in Div 1a at WMU where he started 1-11.
Yet thousands of students came to every home game and rowed the boat. Loyalty rarely seen in DeKalb since coach Novak departed.

Similarly as NIU FB Coach JOE Novak promised , those who stay will be champions (a relative term) PJ 's slogan from worst to first seems very similar.
WMU's FB team has gone from worst to first in record time.
They might not be as good as NIU FB 2003, but they certainly have attracted National attention, which one cannot discuss without mentioning NIU FB.

NIU FB team will not be in Detroit for the first time in 6 years.
WMU"s appearance as a 12-0 MAC West Champion and it's incredible 4 year rise
Cannot be told without mentioning NIU FB. Specifically the 2003 NIU FB team, the 2011 NIU FB team, the 2012 Orange Bowl NIU FB team, the 2013 ranked 12-0 NIU FB team that lost badly to Bowling Green costing a second MAC at large Bowl invite.

For the 7nth straight year I will be rooting strongly for the MAC West champion in Detroit.

Hopefully many on this board will be doing the same!

Oh my god, PJ's dad is Rod Carey's uncle. This can be the only explanation of all these long winded posts about the genius of PJ and the second to none coaching ability of Rod

Is this PJ's dad?

Oh my god, PJ's dad is Rod Carey's uncle. This can be the only explanation of all these long winded posts about the genius of PJ and the second to none coaching ability of Rod

Dpn, I'm just going to say this once... ya mad bro?

Even if you're displeased with this season , your inability to reflect is symptomatic of a sociopath ..get help

RE: I'm rooting for PJ
Boy oh boy, how fast this thread has turned to comical. PJ's personal life is not my business. Wish him the best as an NIU alumni! I was a Freshman at the same time he was. Was a dorm neighbor of Thomas Hammock so I respect what he's doing right now and people from that class . Shows you can have a successful career in football without having to just make the NFL. Gotta give respect where it's due.

You remember what you believe, not what really happened.
Compher thought he'd score points by bringing a popular, rising young assistant back to his alma mater but didn't clear it with Doeren; so Doeren has an offensive coordinator he doesn't really know and makes it clear the playbook is his and that Fleck shouldn't touch it; seeing the limitations and potential conflicts Fleck gets an offer from his most recent coach to come join him in the NFL; people like you label Fleck a turncoat, backstabber, etc., when in reality a potentially more messy situation was avoided. Fleck did what was best for him and his family, went to the NFL and continued to improve his coaching resume. Doeren, not thrilled with Compher as a boss departs sooner than he may have originally planned and takes on a monumental task at North Carolina State where he still hasn't been given credit by all the Wolfpack boosters for what he's done. Compher, being the weak, inefficient AD with no connections or ability to seize a golden opportunity, takes the easy way out and under the notion of continuity, promotes an offensive coordinator who was an okay line coach. Doeren, already knowing Carey couldn't help him at NC State, breathes a sigh of relief over not having to look like he left him behind. Having used NIU as a stepping stone and worn out his welcome, Compher like Doeren moves east to supposedly greener pastures never caring to look back at DeKalb. Isn't it ironic that even after leaving, Groth and Phillips maintain connections to people back here, as have Novak and Kill. It doesn't take long for Compher to reveal to ECU folks that he was a sequel to O'Dell. Thanks to inherited talent, Carey's brutish behavior, non-communicative manner, and questionable play-calling, are all overlooked during bowl performances as abysmal as the Huskies' MACC effort when Kill's departure was also botched by the NIU administration. Now a majority of Huskie fans would prefer not to spare the Rod and wonder why the advantages of a historic Orange Bowl couldn't be parlayed into Boise State Part II. Then there's Fleck, who continued to respect, praise and work on emulating what he learned at NIU and from Novak. So just like the Huskies, the Broncos are battling the prejudices of the CFP/ESPN/P5 elitists no longer interested in granting the carrot of January bowl they originally dangled. However, if huskiebob, sterling1man, MileHighHuskie, BDB5yp, Cowboy95, jjprender, or anyone else recalls any of those better bygone days, they're simply living in a past that doesn't match what DPN remembers.

DPN has only been around this board for around three years. The rest of us have been on for well over ten years, in some cases twelve or thirteen years.

Sorry you only have the attention span and comprehension level for only a tweet.
In a nutshell, you obviously never dealt with Fleck directly (or even Compher, Doeren, or Carey), and lack knowledge of what happened. Surprised to see you acknowledge his recruiting and not discredit his coaching. If you would have dealt personally with Fleck, you might come to learn he's at the very least a good person, but most definitely, a genuine Huskie. Have a Merry Christmas.

I sat next to PJ on a flight to California when he was at NIU, kind of a douche.
