RE: Basketball RPI gets a boost
Can not think of Jimmy V of North Carolina State without also thinking about the alley oop basket that cost UH the NCAA championship in the 1980s.

Don't know that Rice will ever be able to join that group. But it's not impossible. And no question there's a huge ROI for getting there. For all the complaints that JK is moving money from football to basketball--and I have no idea as to the validity of those assertions--given where we are, that might be exactly the right move.

Texas Tech beats UTSA, 87-50.
UAB beats Stephen F. Austin, 84-73.

That and Jimmy V running around the court like a mad man afterward.

That was a great game I'll never forget. Wasn't that the year Rice won a few games in the SWC tourney and nearly derailed the coogs by almost upsetting Houston and taking the auto-bid?

No, that was the year afterward, 1984. In 1983, Rice lost in the first round of the tournament to make its all-time tournament record 0-10. In 1984, the Owls hosted the first-round game for the first time ever and defeated TCU, then went to the main tournament in The Summit and knocked off Texas Tech in the next round to face UH in the semi-final. Down by 15 at one point, the Owls pulled to within three in the final 30 seconds with the ball but had a basket disallowed on a charge, and the Cougars hung on to win 53-50. It was the Phi Slamma Jamma crew's lowest point output and the worst rebound margin (-15) of the season, significant for a team that finished as national runner-up.

I did not follow basketball until Tommy Suitts left. But, it took me a little while to realize I was still in HS during this season (1983-84). I think Rice would've had Ricky Pierce, Bobby Tudor, Bobby Williams, and Terrance Cashaw on that team?

Pierce, Tudor and Willis were seniors in 1981-82. See my and Minnewaska's posts in the "Basketball Non-Conference Records" thread for more detailed discussion of that team.

Were you also a senior that year Rick?

Kind of. It was my 4th year. I was on the 5-year plan, so I graduated in 1983. But Minnewaska Owl and I matriculated in 1978, as did a whole lot of mutual friends and acquaintances. I roomed with the basketball team's manager. It was fun, but I probably (read: undoubtedly) spent too much time on Rice sports in 1981-82. I'd do it again though.
