Great for the seniors, and great for the kids who may have never been to a place like Atlantis in their lives. They put in the work, they revived the program, they represented the University very well, so the game is really all about them.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of a run of bowl games over the next few years, that many more EMU fans can actually attend.

Worst case, host a big house party, and watch the game with friends and family....or head out to the local sports bar in full EMU attire and support the team that way.

We're in a bowl game for the first time in nearly 30 years. Let that sink in, and try to enjoy the moment however you can.

And its posts like this (not the Bob W or political ones) that make so many of us on this board appreciate your comments. Thank you for making so many excellent points.

I get it that promotes tourism in the Bahamas, but I don't own a hotel there so I really don't care.

Get rid of this bowl game and replace it with something more accessible to many. Perhaps another one of the northern cities that has a dome like Indianapolis or Minneapolis. Hell, put one at the Superior Dome in Marquette. I'm sure the Yoopers could use a little tourism.

I agree with Eagle Tough's post but because I believe in transparency and fairness I would like to know who outside of players and coaches and training staff EMU is footing the bill to go to the bowl ie admin types, faculty regents etc.
An email announcing the bowl bid stated that most will pay their own way. I can't remember the exact wording something like 'all non-essential atheletics staff' will have to pay. The email explicitly stated that the regents and the pres will pay.

RE: Unofficial Bahamas Bowl Travel Thread
I went to the Cal Bowl way back in '87 and was hoping to make it this year to a bowl game. The package prices to the Bahamas Bowl stunned me. Then I finally thought I'd call Colin Athletic Tours (888-471-3032) and see what else they might offer. They've discontinued the package because of disinterest and offered no other option, but to look for myself.

I'll probably take one more look at arranging something myself, but the timing of the game is so poor for travel I doubt I'll come up with something reasonable.

Doesn't surprise me.

I've spent untold hours trying to figure out a trip. I'm having trouble now, not with lodging, but I 'missed the boat' on air fare as I tried to wait for another person. My air fare options almost doubled within a few days (this is out of D.C.).

Paradise Island where most people stay is very pricey and folks say the food is even more pricey.

BTW, feel free to PM if you wish.

I wish the businesses on Paradise Island tried to make the lodging, etc. more 'traveler friendly' but they seem to be saying: not much competition on Paradise Island and they keep prices very high.

I believe the issue is that one company has most of the lodging, they literally control the island with their series of hotels. They apparently went expensive, very expensive, luxury, and very luxurious.

It seems to me that if a destination is over-priced, not very accommodating, and not travel friendly that their bowl will not last long. They should be rolling out the red carpet. Make it easy and affordable for people to make a quick trip and maybe they'll come back later.

If this keeps up it'll soon be replaced by another bowl in the continental US.

RE: Unofficial Bahamas Bowl Travel Thread
Air fare has skyrocketed in the last few days (at least from the D.C. area).

EDIT:

I checked a few cities: D.C. area, Fort Lauderdale (for those in So. Florida) and Detroit.

Fort Lauderdale to Nassau is cheap (200 bucks RT).

The expensive part is getting to Florida so close to Christmas.

RE: Unofficial Bahamas Bowl Travel Thread
BTW, the one thing folks should keep in mind:

Bowls are usually in the south or west (i.e., Sun Belt cities, except Detroit, NYC, Boise) so travel will always be an issue.

Our WMU friends are also paying big bucks to get to Dallas over New Year's Day holiday.

Bowl games are not easy or cheap for folks in the midwest...

The reason MAC folks loved the bowl in Detroit is that it gave MAC fans a fair chance of drawing that bowl. This year the chance became essentially zero when it became obvious that the ACC would be able to fill its side.

I'm going to miss the bowl, not because the prices were too high (one could have assembled their own package much cheaper), but I waited on another person and timing WAS EVERYTHING on this trip. Every couple days someone waited was a killer on air fare.

A RT from D.C. to Nassau I could have gotten the day the bowl pairings were announced was 300 bucks. Yesterday the same flight were over 850 bucks. I think Monday it was over 500 bucks.

One thing about this bowl. For the BOWL ORGANIZERS they get millions and millions of dollar publicity for the island for a modest investment. I guarantee you 5 years ago (before the bowl) I never thought twice about Popeyes or the Bahamas.

RE: EMU. If EMU spends, like CMU, 150K, they get millions of dollars publicity for pennies on the dollar...

As most of us know, this season has been a god send for the university (and how about WMU!!! WMU could NOT have bought the good publicity they got for their GameDay, MACC and Cotton Bowl. Literally FOR THIS SEASON, WMU took MSU's place as part of MI' Big TWO FB teams.).

No way we risk anybody that's not 110%, for what is really a meaningless game in the bigger picture.

Even if Vann was 100%, no way he plays in this game.

I disagree, he can't be 110% so if he is 100% he should play and will want to play. As long as he is cleared by doctors. The seniors goal was the go to and WIN, not just show up. He gives us a better chance to win than the other backs.

Granted I don't think he is near 100% so its all probably mute.

Is Vann using a medical redshirt this year? if he is, and he's 100%, that's a difficult decision to make for the coaches & player.

Don't believe so, because he already used his redshirt his true freshman year.

You are allowed a potential 6th year if you miss a large portion of the season due to injury (even if you've used a traditional redshirt already). Vann will almost certainly get this extra year...if he wants it.

Sam- I thought his first year was a medical redshirt?

I don't think his 1st year was a medical redshirt. He was hurt, but didn't declare to the NCAA, so it doesn't count as medical redshirt.

I was under the impression 6th years only come with 2 medical redshirt years, but I could very well be wrong.
