ACTUAL: Higher education R&D expenditures - 2015 C-USA Rank
The National Science Foundation has released its Higher Education list of 640 schools by Research and Development funding. No Carnegie arcane ranking methodology here; just the factual data.

Tier 1:
41 UAB $516.2M

Tier 2:
119 FIU $163.0M
125 Rice $144.7M

Tier 3:
151 UTEP $89.4M
169 ODU $65.1M
186 UTSA $54.9M
192 USM $51.8M
205 UNT $43.6M

Tier 4:
245 Charlotte $24.9
253 La Tech $23,8
259 FAU $21.2
264 Marshall $19.9

Tier 5:
347 WKU $7.9M
408 MTSU $4.4M

Kinda hard to say F_U in describing the two Florida universities when you see numbers like that.

I would expect some movement from Middle Tennessee with the recently completed Science building a couple of years ago, and being able to do things there that before were not really possible.

This is probably the most important aspect that I expect MT having its own board beginning in 2017 will finally be able to address.

The interesting thing to me about this is how we talk about the influence of Alabama over UAB - but it seems to only apply to sports. There are actual state statutes and codes that direct a large proportion of grants and funds to the University of Tennessee.

More importantly though, these numbers are a legacy of the Geier Desegregation lawsuit, which lasted for 40 years that Memphis somehow was able to skirt on.

So, USM sucks academically... that's what all the AACK posters continually claim.
Right, then.

The BOT knows the medical school/research enterprise/hospital is the cash cow. They view that part of UAB separately from the traditional undergraduate university in which they hamstring more than just sports.

UAB contributes 70% of the revenue the UA System takes in. They then use the system revenue figures to get favorable bond rates to finance the construction spree at UA while making UAB either jump through a multitude of hoops to use bond financing or pay cash for new construction not affiliated with medicine/research.
