Western Michigan Broncos
2015-16 Record vs D-I: 11-19 (7-11 MAC, 10th)
2015-16 RPI: 209
Returning Starters (3): Sr. G/F Tucker Haymond; Jr. G Thomas Wilder; Jr. C Drake LaMont
2016-17 Record vs. D-I: 1-4 (# 297 RPI)
With The Bronco football team sitting at 12-0 and ranked 13th nationally, it's easy to see why the fan attention has been diverted to this point in the basketball season. And to be fair, there hasn't been a lot going WMU's way so far in the basketball campaign for the fans to get excited about. Despite returning 3 starters from last year's squad, the team opened their season with four straight double-digit losses against D-I competition to start the season.
Still, there might be signs of hope. On Saturday, the Broncos defeated Central Arkansas 80-63. Junior center
Drake LaMont was the star of the contest, posting a final line of 23 points on 8-14 shooting, 9 rebounds, and a block in 24 minutes of action. The 6-10 big man could give us fits down low. Meanwhile, junior scoring guard
Thomas Wilder leads the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and three point shooting (9-21, .429). Rounding out the returning core is Senior point guard
Tucker Haymond, who is averaging 12.5 points, 4.8 assists and has a 2.4 assist/turnover ratio.
But the most exciting player on the team might be freshman forward
Brandon Johnson. The 6-8, 225 lbs. Chicago product is already averaging double-digits (10.2 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg). Johnson has started all 6 games for the Broncos. The Broncos also have been going with 7-foot sophomore
Seth Dugan in their starting lineup, with LaMont coming off the bench. Dugan is averaging 6.0 rebounds and has 4 blocks, but he also leads the team in turnovers, with 14, a likely reason why his minutes have been restricted to about 18 per contest.
Speaking of turnovers, WMU struggles in this department, giving the ball away 108 times this year (18.0 per game). This doesn't bode well for Steve Hawkins' squad, as the Seahawks are forcing opponents to turn the ball over at a clip of 18.2 per game. Also, while Wilder represents a perimeter threat for the Broncos, the rest of the team is shooting just .224 from beyond the arc.
Defensively, WMU is allowing teams to shoot a gaudy .473 from the field and .385 from beyond the 3-pt line. WMU has been able to use their size to outrebound opponents by a +2.0 margin, which is impressive given how many made shots opponents are making and how many the Broncos are missing. But they haven't been enforcers on the inside, with only 12 blocks as a team. The Seahawks shouldn't be afraid to get to the rim against the Broncos.
