Quote:TCU's tuition has doubled just since 2011 which is certainly more than the inflation rate of 31% in the same period.
Rice's has gone up only 63.9% over that same time span ... from $34,900 in 2011-12 to $57,210 for 2023-24.
From 0 my first 4 years.
To throw a bone to TCU, their target demographic can afford it.

And that demographic is quite happy to pay extra to keep the hoi polloi out.
TCU and in particular its athletic resurgence have been built on the Barnett Shale.

That may be true of the athletic program but TCU’s student body growth has come from out of state. It is under 50% Texas residents.

The Barnett Shale injected money into North Texas in the earlier period. I know, because I was one who was injected. It no longer fuels the engine. But it did during the key years of TCU’s emergence.
TCU has been a part of my family for since the 1930’s. Sister, mother, cousin all grads. Multiple family on faculty. I even have credits there.
Lots of students who have family money get in with very low SATs. One I know got in with a 400 on the math part of the SAT. If Daddy owns a string of auto parts stores or a large construction company, they are exactly who TCu wants, since in 20-30 years, Junior will be the CEO and an alum with deep pockets. I think the tuition increase just makes TCU more desirable to well heeled people.
Rice people often talk about the “TCU model”.
Step one is “first, have a large and wealthy alumni body who are willing to spend the big bucks”.

That all is true. All I’m saying is that the majority of the parents writing the TUITION checks (what this thread was about) aren’t from Texas. You can say the same of Rice, SMU, etc.
If I’m commenting on anything athletically, it’s that having a student body base hailing from outside Texas is NOT an athletic barrier. As I’ve also attempted to demonstrate previously using demographic data, out-of-state students are actually MORE likely to be sports fans.

I think the harder part of the TCU model for Rice to emulate would be step two--have the city and county firmly behind you. The emergence of UH has pretty much killed that. My impression from my undergrad days was that Rice really didn't give a flying f-k about Houston or Harris County, and that allowed UH free rein to become Houston's team.
I remember the Rice-UH game that closed down SWC football. After UH pulled out a last-minute victory (or nearly so, don't remeber exactly) a member of the athletic staff whom I respected greatly (and still do) said, "The bad news is we lost. The good news is that we don't have to play those bastards ever again." That may be the only time that I ever disagreed with that person, but I thought that was exactly wrong. I thought the development of Rice-UH as a hotly contested intra-city rival in every sport was the most critcal possible development for a sustained Rice athletic program. Rive had lost LSU as a sellout-the-stadium rival a decade before; with the demise of the SWC it was about to lose the other pillar on which its program had operate--TexasU. Finding a replacement was critical, and UH seemed the only possibility. Still does today.

Agree.
Step two is “be the only game in town”.
