With a 16-21 record in three seasons at Texas and coming off two disastrous losses to close the 2016 season, Charlie Strong has been fired as coach of the Longhorns.

Strong, who was hired by Texas after going 23-3 in his final two seasons at Louisville, was never able to turn things around at Texas, losing a bowl game in his first season, failing to qualify for the postseason in 2015 and now 5-7 in his final season.

"It's a very difficult day for me, my family and all of the people affected by this decision. I'm most disappointed for these kids and our staff who have poured so much of their lives into this program for the last three years," Strong said in a statement released by the school. "I do understand that it comes down to wins and losses, and we have not done our job in that area yet. I accept full responsibility for that, but know in my heart that we accomplished our primary goal, which is the development of young men. We have had a positive impact on our campus and the community, and I'm proud of how our team is focused on earning their degrees.

HC of a smaller school, though I think he'd have more success as a DC at a bigger school.

Obviously Herman is going to be hired. Otherwise, he'd have already been announced for LSU.

Houston is the cradle of Texas P5 coaches! (Briles did an amazing job at Baylor -- don't give two f___ about the off-field crap, you can't take his on-field success away from him)

I am not trusting any rumors around Herman going to Texas. They kept saying Houston is a shoe in to join the Big 12 which them and BYU would get in, but you see how bad those reportings from these same so call sports reporters especially from ESPN have been all wrong about the Big 12 from the get go. Why would anybody want to coach in the Big 12 when you have too many ego-maniacs in charge of each of these universities and so forth.

Underwhelming is an understatement.

Worst record of any coach in Texas football history. He was dead last. One of only two with a losing record. 2nd streak of 3 straight losing seasons and the first time since 1938.

TCU had an up and down season but they did finish Strong

Lol.....I almost hope we hire him and pay him $1 a year. Make Texas pay for our head coach for the next few years.

My problem with Strong is his whole image as an above average coach is based on 2 years with an experienced NFL level QB at the controls. Outside of those 2 Bridgewater years, Strong is a sub-500 coach for his career. With all the resources and talent available at UT---Strong finished below .500. That doesn't inspire confidence.

I have read that Strong gets less of a buyout if he coaches next year, Go to TV. Good money, less stress, and can get back into coaching in a year or two with the right opening (ND?)

Strong makes $5 million for the next 2 years. If he makes less than that (which he absolutely will), Texas pays the difference to get him up to the $5MM.

Strong may be better off being a college DC than a head coach.

Strong would do really well at a place like Rice or Tulane. Smaller private schools that don't have a ton of expectations and would welcome a coach that attempts to win somewhat cleanly.
