Toledo Football 2017
Non conference schedule
08/31 - Elon
09/09 - at Nevada
09/16 - Tulsa
09/23 - at Miami (FL)

2-2 would be good coming out of this as Tulsa is a 8 win team this year

Woodside coming back for senior year could be a strength and a solid RB group with Kareem Hunt gone

I think now that Miami OH is a little better it is a sure thing Toledo will draw Miami next year. Will be getting WMU and NIU and EMU in Toledo.

Hope next year can be better defensively. Might need to aggressively seek JUCO and 5th year senior types to shore up depth on defense.

Just need to win some football games when they matter.

We might suck next year. I wouldn't be surprised if we won 4 games or won 9 games again.

Okay, I'll be more specific. We go 5-7.

We might do well next year if we can get some grad transfers or incoming freshmen at ILB and DL

RE: Toledo Football 2017
Woodside had a good season, particularly coming after a red shirt season. Can't rest on those laurels, though. He still locks in on receivers and defenders notice that. He also got rattled in 2 games that we lost, leading to spotty performances by him. As a 5th year Senior, there is room for improvement, and I think he's capable of it. And let's find some designed runs for him next season--we were awfully predictable in our running game, and we're largely bailed out by a stable of great running backs.

We should be OK at receiver next season, though I'm concerned about the TE position, which was a huge weapon for us. While you can't replace a Kareem Hunt, there are some very good backs who will make their mark, probably by committee next season (Swanson, Thompkins, and I think even Warren as a true freshman).

O line needs to get better. Steps were taken backwards from what used to be a team strength in recent seasons--even before the injuries. We need to get stronger, nastier. Too many penalties by that unit this season, as well.

D was a dumpster fire overall. Can't win the Division let alone the Conference with only 2 or 3 strong contributors. I just don't see much coming back that makes me hopeful for next season, and recruiting for the spring class is pretty much done with a focus largely on offense and not really too many defensive players that get my attention. Candle will need to survive next season's D and maybe use the 2018 class to begin the rebuild.

Special teams was inconsistent. We need a punter for next season and I wouldn't be opposed to another scholarship kicker, as well--but again, based on verbals, it seems like we're already done recruiting.

With that non-conference schedule, 2-2 seems doable but I could also see us going 1-3, especially if the D is as bad as I think it will be early in the season. 7-5 and a bowl game would be a decent re-building campaign for us--but I think we fall back to 3rd in the MAC West, with both EMU and Ball State keeping some pressure on us.

Agreed, except our defense will be even more atrocious, and the offense will be good again but won't be able to keep up.

RE: Toledo Football 2017
Like many many seasons, I believe this team was capable of winning it all.
Toledo is snakebit.

This team wins a MACC if WMU doesn't have its all time greatest team in history. We tend to have good teams in seasons when someone else has an all-time greatest team.
Ball State and Hoke.
Fleck and WMU.
CMU in the Brian Kelly/Butch Jones era.
Just seems like other teams are catching lightning in a bottle. Meanwhile we just continue to be consistently very good.

As for 2017 I have no idea.
Woodside will probably have another good season with big statistics.
I hope that deep inside he has that intangible that lifts a great team into a champion by putting them on his shoulders and willing it himself.

Has anyone said anything? He was already a 5th year senior, as he took a redshirt his 1st year. Unless that freshman redshirt was due to an injury, I'm not sure he qualified for a 6th year.

RE: Toledo Football 2017
first. this season is still going. we are the MAC's 2nd most desirable bowl team right now, and if Western goes to the Cotton Bowl by default we get our pick of 5 MAC teams and possibly the Detroit Bowl against a Big 10 or ACC team

Second, why the long faces. Realistically, this year went as well as could be expected so far. we graduated the deepest senior class of defensive linemen ever. lost one ILB - murdock- to graduation and the other - Coleman (not coming back, btw, not eligible for rs)-to injury. we lost our best cover corner-norrils-in a decade, a 3 yr starter at free safety, etc...this defense was a massive rebuild job and they were ok, sometimes good against weaker offenses, just not able to get push and play physical with good offensive teams. i agree that recruiting the past couple years and next has not addressed the need for size and physicality on defense, although we have a couple promising LB recruits in 2017. there was a change in coordinators on defense. the new guy from kent is capable, but last year's team was better coached at blowing up blockers, sprinting at the qb when he scrambles, and finishing tackles as a team.

offense was great. woodside needs to study aaron rodgers and learn escape pocket pressure. he improves every year, so i would expect him to be even better. the receivers are studs. TE there is no way to replace roberts. he will be an early round draft choice. TE will be less of a weapon next season, but will have a capable guy and the change might help the blocking as roberts was only so-so at that part of the TE job.

one biggest problem with this year's team was special teams. our kickoff return team was terrible. they set up and blocked poorly. the returners jogged upfield too often and were not decisive. we got way too many penalties that started drives deep in our own territory. the coverage teams are OK but down from last year and less physical. we never used julian. i know he's our backup qb, but he's a hell of a punter and a great weapon on fakes. i'm hoping he's the guy at P next yr. the new very young special teams coach came in and talked a lot about trick plays and aggressiveness but put together a very conservative style of special teams play.

I would like a 10 win season if that is what you are saying...

However, with all the weeknight games I haven't been to a Rockets game since mid October and really wanted a MACC to attend.
And this season felt over to me a while ago.
Sick of mid-week football

I guess I look at the bowl game as being the "result" of a season & not part of the season per se...while the W/L counts in the record, you often see teams play looser and try new things out, almost as a precursor to the "next" season. You say "tomato", I say...but in any event, I do look forward to our bowl game, but if Ohio wins the MACC (and they did beat us, so even if unlikely, it could happen), we become the MAC's third best bowl option. As long as we don't get sent to the Potato or Camelia Bowl, I'm happy. While it might not seem as "fun", I think getting the Detroit Bowl vs. a Big Whatever school would be a good matchup for us, at least to showcase our offense...I know the EMU fans want that spot, but until they build some consistency, I think they need to be happy with Boise or Montgomery if it means we can go to Detroit.

Agree, I like detroit vs Maryland or Indiana. depends on the last week results and the playoff teams. the detroit bowl could get both it's big 10 and acc teams, just 1, or none.

Devastating news to hear about Coleman not being eligible to return next year. We would have been a whole different defense with him and Woodley both out there...and Taafe not so much.
