It doesn't "reward" us at all. The games literally don't count in the eyes of the committee.

And therefore aren't calculated into the ranking, meanwhile, American University and Radford are factored into and lower Akron's RPI. RPI promotes scheduling D2 opponents over scheduling below average D1 programs.

I think the more accurate statement is it doesn't penalize you in the rankings for playing lesser opponents. Of course, when the resumes are looked at it doesn't give you credit for those victories either. So for RPI purposes last year Eastern had a 14-15 record instead of the 18-15 record they show on the schedule.
Not that any of it matters since RPI isn't given much weight anymore.

Exactly. If anything, it hurts us in the eyes of the committee, as it makes our record look worse. If we scheduled teams from the SWAC or MEAC instead, our record would look better, but SOS and RPI would look worse. It's kind of a "pick your poison".

I'd agree with that statement, which goes back to my prior statement that RPI is an outdated metric. People have learned how to game it. Yet that doesn't stop some people on internet forums trying to use it to justify their team should be included in the tourney.

Would love to know the thinking that goes into why certain teams schedule so many of the non-D1 games. Is it a cost thing?

I'd say it's a cost thing. Being able to pad a win total to make it look like you are better than what you really are to your fans probably helps some too.

If the team wins a lot of games, that makes it more likely for both the coach and the AD to keep their jobs, right? I wonder if that plays into it. You're left playing a what-if game regarding how the team would have done with an actual decent schedule.
