First test coming for Houston basketball
The Coogs play Vermont on Wednesday at 6:30 central in the Gulf Coast Showdown in Florida.

Pomeroy ranks Vermont 98th, in the same vicinity as Memphis and UCF. They'd probably finish 5th to 7th in our league.

Vermont's coach John Becker has won 20+ games for five straight years, and is off to a 5-1 start this season.

This will be the first real test for the Coogs. In the first 3 games, we've manhandled:

Morgan St 93-52
George Mason 93-56
South Dakota 85-58

Those teams aren't very good.

Vermont is one of five decent teams we play in the preseason, to go with:

Home
Rhode Island (37th in Pomeroy)
Harvard (130)

Road
LSU (90)
Arkansas (49)

We'll be heavily favored in the other games at home vs Cornell, Liberty, Prairie View and UT-RGV.

Both Memphis and UCF would destroy Vermont. And no, they wouldn't finish 5th or 6th in the AAC.

UVM was picked first in the AE. UNH, who we lost to, was picked second.

I have not seen Vermont play, but I doubt they could match the Tiger's combination of talent and coaching.

Not going to pretend like I know much about Vermont basketball but their coach was voted as the 23rd best head coach in college basketball and he's one of only 10 coaches to have 5 consecutive 20 win seasons in his first five seasons as a head coach. Thats pretty stout if you ask me. Now just based of a quick glance at their roster, I would agree that Memphis has more athletic talent. Overall they'd probably be a middle of the pack program in AAC.

Hey, Memphis is 4-0. Granted, we squashed 4 cupcakes, but our leading scorer has 4 double doubles.

Good for us to be up at top, even if only a little while.
Tubby is doing well. We play Providence this weekend, so our first real test too.

Absolutely. Its good to have the traditional powers do well, they garner more attention and respect from the media and polls. Personally I hope you guys win every game not against UH. GL against the Friars, yall can definitely win that game!

I will not bore the reader with details, but Tubby Smith has a HOF resume that few can match. Our team is noticeably better coached this year, although I am unsure it will translate into victories against good teams. We should know more about the caliber of the Tiger team after this weekend.

You did a fine job. The first step to acquiring knowledge is admitting one does not have it. 04-cheers

Tacko could have a taco in one hand and still beat Vermont.

Again? What is the all-time record now? UC 27-UH 2? Confirms what they say about the broken clock being right twice per day!

Scoreboard, what does that mean? You snuck one by us at your place. I do not think you understand the numbers. If we play twice for the next thirteen years, you have to win every time to even us out. Is there a more lopsided sports advantage in college sports?
