SWAC Coaching Staff
I'm sick of hearing how Hopson brought in his "SWAC coaching staff" and that this is the problem. I've heard this on the local sports talk show as well as posted here. The fact is Hopson brought two coaches from Alcorn...2. The rest came from places like Memphis, Kentucky, UNC, West Georgia, NWCC, and USM. That's 2out of 10 So, just stop it. You can say they are bad coaches but saying they are a SWAC coaching staff is just wrong.

by my count thats 4 LOL

The SWAC coaching comments refer to his level of coaching more than anything. In other words he is in over his head because hes a swac level HC.

RE: SWAC Coaching Staff
Turner isn't an on field coach. Hopson has coached at levels much higher than the SWAC. Pecoraro was a GA for Bobby Bowden at Florida State. I get tired of hearing the SWAC stuff too. If they aren't good coaches, they just aren't good coaches. But the SWAC has nothing to do with it.

We've hired coaches before that didn't have any experience at a level even on par with the SWAC that turned out to be good coaches. We hired Chip Lindsey and John Simon straight out of high school. They turned out fine. If someone can coach they can coach I don't care if they come from the SWAC or the New England Patriots.

I'll do you one better. When our basketball job comes open I would be in favor of hiring Tougaloo's coach. It will never happen because of a perception issue, but he's as good a coach as we'll find. Check his resume.

I disagree. Its a swac issue for one reason. Not bc its swac alone....but what comes with a swac job? Specifically, the compensation. The swac coaches get paid as little (or less) than anyone. Everyone wants to get paid as much as possible. If you are a swac coach, its typically bc you are desparate for a job and cant get a better paying one. Hop was desperate to be a HC. Thats why he took the ASU job. Some swac assistants get paid $35,000. Some more, some less. If you're a coach and can get a better paying job, then you will. If not, its likely bc you arent one of the better coaches and can't land a better gig. Therefore, in short, if you are a swac coach, its bc you aren't able to get a better coaching job, bc you suck at coaching more than others. Hence, swac coaches suck. If its your first job or two, thats one thing. But pecorado has been around a while, as you mentioned. If he has ties in other places, has been around a number of years, and the best he could do was coach in the swac with minimal pay.....well you should be able to figure out the reason why by now.

He's got a point (for once). If you find yourself as the HC at Alcorn early in your career, that may even be a good thing since somebody trusted you enough to hand you the keys. If you've been on the major-college coaching circuit since 1992 and are HC at Alcorn...ehhhhh, not so much. That is Hopson's biggest similarity to Ellis Johnson: he'd been around an awfully long time as an assistant. Unlike Johnson, he was actually successful at his one HC gig, so there's that.
