Texas is laughing stock of CFB
Whoever would have thought it?

First they screw up the Mac Brown firing

Then they work behind the scenes to scuttle a Houston-included Big 12 expansion

Finally the Charlie Strong mess

Remember when UT was powerful, respected, even feared? Seems long ago.

Where have you gone, Deloss Dodds?

Hmmm. I can't stand UT, but I think this is a bit unfair. Coaching changes are always messy. Sure probably some missteps, but it's mostly just par for the course. And you can't blame UT for the Big 12 not expanding. That was definitely a group decision.

They'll be back soon, unfortunately.

I think UT actually did push Houston this year, but not enough support overall. On coaches, it is very hard in this day and age to do it right. As soon as a decision is reached (and it requires a lot of people talking), social media means it will leak (even if not formal or official).

Texas is a "laughing stock" only in the sense that the New York Yankees are a "laughing stock" when they have a down period.

Texas arguably has the best recruiting location of any school in the country, a national brand name, a massive fan and alumni base, the ability to deliver the largest TV market (its entire state with multiple large media markets) of any school in the country, gushers of athletic department revenue, and elite academics on top of all of that.

They'll be back, just like Alabama came back when they hired Nick Saban and Michigan came back when they hired Jim Harbaugh (and Texas honestly has better permanently entrenched institutional advantages compared to either of those schools).

They need a coach who can either play politics while winning while dealing with their horde of pushy boosters (Mack Brown pre 2009) or who can win while basically telling their boosters to STFU (Nick Saban @ Alabama) Who knows if that coach is available for them to hire this winter.

Texas has lots of advantages, but it also has lots of disadvantages - such as overly meddlesome alumni, ridiculous state politics that mess with football, a remote location from much of their population base (especially compared to Ohio, Michigan, Alabama), and numerous competitors for attention within the state.

If Texas really had that big of an overall institutional advantage, I think they would have won more than 1 national title in the last 4 decades.

I agree with this, but I'd also ad that Texas has 12 FBS teams. That's a lot of competition for recruits.

And Texas fans really are the worst. They have terribly unrealistic expectations and they think winning football games is their god given right or something.

I think you have the right analogy, just the wrong team. O have followed CFB since 1985; Texas was pretty underwhelming from 1985-1997 and then again since 2010. Of course, the Mack Brown Era of 98-09 was great, I'm not sure which is the true Texas, the crappy one or the great one. I agree with all your other pro-Texas points.

I think a quick history lesson would show that this is strikingly par for the course.

Silly. What should Texas be doing that they aren't?

I agree Frank, they will be back soon - too many advantages. With them being down for so long just goes to show how thin the margin is between winning and losing. That being said, Texas has been known to do less with more.

Well with Notre Dame's forfeits, Texas is back officially in the #2 position behind Michigan in all time wins. Although the way things are going, Nebraska might pass us back again by January 1.
