The Lady Seahawks definitely look better this year. Yes, that's an understatement, considering at times last season we were only dressing 6 players on gameday.

But there's legitimate reason for optimism. Penn St transfer Jenny DeGraaf is averaging 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds three games into the season. And the Seahawks picked up a decent win road over Georgia State on Sunday to improve to 2-1.

Next up, UNCW hosts Providence and La Salle in our annual Thanksgiving tournament, with gametime at about 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

For sure. And so far this season Providence looks pretty good. They're 3-0 with an average margin of victory of +14.3. Last year they went 5-24 (1-17, last place in Big East) so thus far, at least, they appear to be much improved.

Women's team won @ Davidson last night to get them back to .500 (3-3). Davidson isn't particularly strong this year but any road win is nice. Next up, the Hawks take their 2-1 road record to Raleigh to face NC State (5-2) on Sunday @ 2.

Game 2 of a basketball doubleheader at Trask getting started in a few minutes. Jimmy Garrity makes his return as HC of Wofford.

Jimmy Garrity and Wofford win at UNCW-that was sweet redemption for him I am sure. He has won at every stop so far since being snubbed by Bass.

Let's be honest... our women's basketball isn't exactly a program to brag about beating.

Might have been a different story if they had hired Garrity instead of whoever coaches there now.

Why did Cynthia Cooper leave to go to Texas Southern. That seemed very random

Not sure why, but I heard she wanted to be closer to home. And I believe her biggest desire is to eventually get the USC job.

Women's team concludes their home stand against D-II Catawba tonight. The Indians beat Coastal Carolina earlier in the season, so let's hope we don't suffer a similar fate.

Seahawks Return from Break to Visit Tennessee

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With the Christmas holiday complete, it's time for the UNCW women's basketball team to return its focus to the court and the Seahawks will do just that on Thursday with a visit to Tennessee for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Lady Vols.

The Seahawks, who are 5-5 on the season, have been idle since posting a 91-65 victory over Catawba to close out a three-game homestand on Dec. 19. Junior guard Madison Raque, the Seahawks' leading scorer, erupted for a career-high 28 points to lead three UNCW players in double figures. Raque also connected on 8 of the Seahawks' school-record 15 made three-point field goals in the victory.

Junior guard Diamond Willis contributed a season-high 18 points in the win over Catawba while freshman guard Timber Tate came off the bench to add 11 points.

Raque, who has scored in double figures in 7-of-10 games this season, paces the UNCW offense with a 13.2 scoring average while playing a team-high 32.0 minutes per game. Junior center Rebekah Banks is grabbing a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game and has posted 10 caroms in four of the last five games.

Looking to extend its three-game win streak, Tennessee carries a 7-4 record into its penultimate non-conference game of the regular season after posting a 110-84 victory over Troy before the holidays. The Lady Vols, who earned their fifth win by 25 or more points this season, will be playing their fourth consecutive home game when they welcome the Seahawks on Thursday.

Junior center Mercedes Russell leads four Tennessee players who averaging more than 10 points per game. The Preseason All-Southeastern Conference Second Team pick is scoring 16.0 points per game and also boasts a team-high 9.2 rebounding average. She is also shooting 55 percent from the field.

Junior guard Diamond DeShields is scoring 15.3 points per game while junior forward Jaime Nared has contributed 14.6 points per contest. After erupting for a career-high 29 points in the win over Troy, junior guard Alexa Middleton is now bringing 10.8 scoring average into Thursday's contest.

Thursday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the Seahawks and the Lady Vols in women's basketball. The teams have one common opponent this season after Tennessee defeated James Madison, 81-69, in the season opener. UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association play at JMU on Monday afternoon for the first of two meetings against the three-time defending league champions.

Season tickets for the 2016-17 UNCW women's basketball season are still available by calling 800-808-UNCW or by visiting UNCWSports.com/BuyTickets.

Women's team was actually competitive in this one for the 1st half, at least. Tennessee was up 43-35 at the break before pulling away thanks to a 27-7 third quarter for the Volunteers. 90-54 final.

Women's team has lost 4 straight and is off to an 0-3 start in league play. Their average margin of defeat the last 4 has been 26.5. Not pretty.

The next 2 for the Lady Seahawks are at home, against Drexel on Friday night and William & Mary on Sunday.

Both of those games could get ugly and fast for UNCW. W&M is much improved and Drexel likely is competing for the title (with JMU and Elon) this season. Drexel is 2-1 with a tough 3 point loss to Elon (top 25 in rpi). Both W&M and Drexel are top 100 in the RPI, drexel is close to top 50. CAA currently has 4 teams in the top 100 rpi (JMU being the other). On a different note about Drexel, all 3 losses for Drexel have been to top 100 rpi teams (Vandy, Bucknell, and Elon). CAA is solid this year in women's basketball.

Not a surprise the league is strong this year after finishing 8th among conferences in the RPI following non-conference play.

UNCW is the only sub-200 RPI team in the CAA, and we're 0-9 vs. Top 200 teams. Ugh. You're 100 % right that it's not likely going to get much better for us.

71-38 for the first one. Your next one vs W&M should be a little bit better but still wont be close. It will be a tough year for your seahawks
