If a woman is pegged to be the next president, then why didn't they simply make a quick offer to Davenport - much in the same way they did to Ono? Ono seemed to really like Davenport and thought she was quite capable. He repeatedly posted that he was confident the team he assembled could run the show without him.
Going back to when I attended UC, we've had Winkler, Steger, Zimpher, Williams, Ono...without getting into the strengths and weaknesses of each, I can't say that men performed better than woman or the whites performed better than minorities. Kind of a mixed bag. Winkler and Williams sucked and I'd put on the negative side of the ledger. The others, I'd put on the positive side.
I'd rank either Zimpher and Steger in either the #1 and #2 spot, Ono as #3, then Winkler and Williams can duke it out for the bottom two spots.

White males are too often hostile when non whites or non males are given equal opportunity for a job. Such is life in 2016 America. Congrats to Davenport on the new gig and thanks for her time here at uc.

I want the best qualified candidate, don't care if they're a female or minority.
I've noticed white males that feel other white males are hostile, etc aren't too keen on giving their job away to a qualified female or minority... that's for any position but theirs I guess.

Exactly correct. Davenport would have made a fantastic president but good for UT for hiring her.
The only people here complaining about her are probably Trump supporters and it goes along perfectly with their line of ass backwards thinking.

Don't buy she was passed over due to her gender. She was likely passed over because UC is looking for someone with a STEM background.

If her gender has held her back in her career, there's no objective evidence to support it. She has had a tremendously successful professional life. Better than 99%+ of the population. She's doing something right.

RE: BEVERLY DAVENPORT SELECTED AS UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE CHANCELLOR
To be fair, Ono was a once in a lifetime type President for UC. He was actively involved with students, alumni, and donors. He lobbied fellow presidents to get us admission into the Big XII. Following Ono would be tough for anyone. I thought that she did a fine job as interim President and wish her nothing but the best. Remember, like her or not, she is coming from UC and therefore representing our great school.

How dare you offer a reasonable explanation for this in this forum instead of providing a polarized political statement.

I don't think anyone was asserting that Davenport was passed over due to her gender. Mostly, people were asserting the only reason she's here is because of her gender, a point that's most likely not true.
I don't know what the inner workings of the search process are, but it's entirely plausible that UC is focused on someone with STEM experience. Let's face it, the liberal arts aren't exactly where UC is its strongest, and I'm sure they want to grow the research enterprise.

Can I get a link to someone saying she was only here due to gender? The only thing I have seen over numerous threads is that some people did not care for her because she wore her politics on her sleeve. Personally I think a university president needs to be mum about their political causes so as not to alienate potential donors/partners--- Dr. Ono, who likely is lock-step with her world view, was very good at dealing with people from all political spectrums.

Davenport had a huge hole in her resume when it comes to the UC job. There is almost zero chance the next president is not African American. This is going to be an optics hire after Sam DuBose.

I'd like to see UC nab Neville Pinto, the acting president at Louisville. Dr. Pinto was previously at UC for 25 years as a Professor Chemical Engineering, Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. For those keeping score he is not Caucasian.
