If we hold Southern Miss to less than 24 I will be shocked. Would love for this to be a comfortable win, but I'm not counting on it.

I know Mullens hasn't been playing. What is the issue? Injury?

The marketing dept will probably refer to it but considering we went so long without playing each other most of our fans probably don't. Personally I look at it as "just" a rivalry game from the aspect it's a game that both fans bases can travel to and the fact it's gone back and forth win/lose wise that it's helped fuel the rivalry

If the freshman was playing QB for USM, I would feel much more confident. IMO, Mullens is a difference maker. I wish he wasn't playing. Especially since it will be USM's "Senior Day" and all.

That said, I believe Tech will still be unstoppable in this game, because frankly no one has stopped Tech all year. The question is, can Mullens make a game of it. I'm picking Tech, 49-31.

No. Louisiana Tech uses that term in their correspondence and their fans mention it on this board. I have not seen it anywhere else.

Here's the wikipedia article on the "Rivalry in Dixie." The name was coined by Maxie Lambright, who played for USM and was Tech's head coach at one point.

In case anyone cares, I've got an article on the rivalry coming out soon on Underdog Dynasty. I can post a link once it's out if anyone is interested.

dude....I've been watching since '74...I know....

EE doesn't have a clue nor do any others that don't remember that history....

I think some only remember how we used to own you guys and many others and now are faltering as many have passed us by......it's pathetic to hear how they live in the past....

the only success that matters is that which is today and tomorrow.....after a period of time, the past is lost forever.....

we still have branding......but that's gonna be lost soon if we don't make some changes quick-like....

there is no questioning that southern miss has let cusa down in totality.....that's just the reality of things today....

So as someone who's been watching for that long, what was the attitude of USM towards Tech? Did y'all think of it as a rivalry? Did we? I wasn't exactly born yet so I don't know lol. I'm genuinely curious. All I know is what Wikipedia tells me lol

I certainly don't hold USM responsible for that nonsense last year. Louisiana Tech beat Louisiana Tech. Southern, just took full advantage of our self-destruction. 03-weeping

As you know, Southern owns the all time series 32-15. They are the ONLY historic rival we have that we haven't completely dominated. I would imagine USM always kinda knew we were there, but it was more like 07-coffee3 meh.

For us, it was a game that had meaning because for many years, our team was lead by legendary Tech coach Maxie Lambright, and he was a USM alumnus. Also, the fact that they beat the crap out of us 7 out of every 10 times we played made it more meaningful to Tech than to USM.

I think anytime you're in a historical rivalry with a school that has absolutely owned you...it means more to you.

I can see that. But we used to dominate NSU and we still cared about that game, huh? Although that's a much closer, in-state rival.

But yeah, what you're saying makes sense.

I remember seeing Ray Guy play for USM against us. I think his number was 44. Man, he could boom them and if I remember correctly he was an All American at DB also. Seems he was a safety.

I only got to play golf with him after he retired....I was numb at the age of 11....dammit boy, you're more on the tail end then I am....I was still in StL when he played for the Raiders....what a class act/man he is.....

the bottom line is this game should've been for the marbles.....and we dropped the ball wayyyyyyyyyy toooooooooooo many times over this season for reasons that have been stated to ad nauseam....

you guys are as much of a rival as any we have (whether any will admit it)

Tech has stepped up their game in both balls.....that works in my book every day.....you guys should be beating your chest at this point.....

Funny you should bring NSU up. I don't like to lose to ANYONE "instate" but it's different than a "rivalry" now. I think at the G5 level particularly, rivalries rise and then fade. I certainly don't like to lose to anyone in-state, but I no longer consider FCS Northwestern State a rival. I no longer consider NLU/ULM a rival. The "golden era" of NLU football was 1-AA and 30 years ago. I suppose you could make a case for USL/ULL as a rival, certainly historical rival, but they're more concerned about what their name is, than fielding a competitive team. We've kinda left them behind too.

Thanks to once again sharing a conference with USM, they're the only historical rival that still matters.

Southern Miss fans, I am headed up to Hattiesburg Friday and was hoping for some direction on a few things.

1. Where to park that's not too far out of the way, but has easy enough access to get back on the road in a semi-timely manner to head back South on 59 after the game.

2. Where to enjoy some food before the game with a little one in tow.

Will be my first time at the Rock. I know timing and circumstance may take a little away of the hype built in to this game earlier in the season, but I fully expect a good 'ol USM LaTech slugfest.

1) I park on the service drive on the East side of 49 right in front of the stadium. I always park at the blue house (you'll know which one when you see it) for $10 and they watch your vehicles. It's a short hop across the highway and into the visitor section.
2) Ed's Burger Joint on Hardy Street is quickly becoming one of my favorite places in Hattiesburg. It's only a couple miles from the stadium and the parking, good burgers and sammiches (I recommend the Flat Top Pig) and reasonable prices.
http://edsburgerjoint.com/menu/
They open at 11, grab a bite, park, hit Eagle Walk at 1 and just kinda mill around the campus until gametime. I don't look for tailgating to be very active, we haven't set up the last 2 home games but there will be some, I'm sure.

I was more referring to the old days where we played NSU every year. Obviously it's hard to call an FCS team a rival when you're an FBS team. That said, I think the student body will be pretty excited about playing them, especially after the 2014 debacle...

As for ULM, they are pretty sad football-wise. I can tell you that when current students look for another school to make fun of, it's ULM.

ULL is down right now, but I'd honestly like to renew that rivalry. Southern Miss is great and all, but our students got wayyyy more excited about playing ULL. When they aren't down they've been one of the better Sun Belt teams, despite the fact we've beaten them I think 8 straight times. To be honest, at least among the students (can't speak for alumni), if ULL joined C-USA, they would quickly be rival #1.
