I think the trophy is lame.

If you wanted to make it real interesting, I-4 should get an additional center traffic lane and the winner will determine which direction traffic will run on the lane for the year. If UCF wins, the lane would be Eastbound and if USF wins the lane would be Westbound.

How about a huge golden belt like the wrestlers have. The winning coach gets to wear it around for a year and flaunt it and trash talk like the wrestlers do. Trophies themselves are lame. It needs to be something unique to make it interesting.

They should have incorporated some of these elements to give it an authentic I-4 feel.

UCF had Football starting in 79' whereas USF didn't start football till 97'
UCF became Division 1 or 1A in 96' whereas USF didn't transition till 2001.

UCF was probably at their peak up to that point in the Dante Culpepper Era back in 98'. However, USF and their coach refused to play UCF in their infancy. This created a lot of animosity between the two fan bases.

To add fuel to the fire,Leavitt would say a lot of incendiary things about UCF, many speculate because Leavitt had interviewed at UCF in the past and was not hired.

UCF was independent whereas USF joined CUSA in football due to their Olympic sport tie in. Then the Big East came and USF fell into that last slot in 2005. Giving the appearance that USF had past UCF in that short window.

As part of the exit agreement with CUSA, USF was "Forced" to play UCF where they went 4-0 in the series (2005-2008) and the series was not renewed.

Obviously a lot has changed since then but it was perceived that the new guy had stolen a better position at the table without earning it. It would be like if Charlotte all of the sudden was invited to the ACC even though they have just started football.

I think with Leavitt being gone (ie the Big Four), USF being terrible for some time and the Big East falling apart, a lot of the animosity is not as angry as it was in the late 90's/ 2000s.

That trophy is worse than Disco Bob's.

Agree with much of this except UCF was far from its peak in 1998.

Add to it: My understanding is that UCF refused to play USF when USF was in their infancy. Not the other way around.

When USF went 4-0 against UCF, UCF was just finally coming out of the pits left by the previous admin. As such the USF fans were insufferable. Leavitt and the USF President cherry picked and refused to renew. The theory being that USF was now above playing UCF and they believed that their natural rivals were really FSU and UM. Thus the Welcome to the Big 4 billboard. So while the USF fans were groveling at the feet of the big 3 and playing all high and mighty UCF began the process of building their program while being snubbed by USF.

USF President campaigning against the inclusion of UCF into the Big East. Anything to keep UCF from being competition to USF.

When USF tanked, UCF was just hitting their stride winning championships and the Fiesta Bowl. UCF fans became insufferable. USF fans became bitter and were in complete denial about the state of the two programs.

From a UCF perspective USF competes with UCF for almost any respect and crumb that is left over after the Florida big 3 get done. UCF fans were always bitter about the quick success of USF. USF fans have taken a long time to realize that their program was not as far ahead as they first thought and that they are not part of the big anything in Florida. They now, for the most part I think they realize that we are good for each other. and while the hate is still there, it is a good hate. a hate that makes it so you can't root for the other team even if it might be in your best interest.
