Just sucks knowing we can't regularly outscore people. It's defense or bust.

RI got wide open 3s all game--missed them in the first half, hit them in the second--and dominated the offensive glass. I just don't understand playing zone with this team. There's no Justin Jackson or Ellis on the back line to protect the rim.

RE: UC-Rhode Island Game Thread
I know game threads are all misery and despair, but I actually had a pretty good feeling after yesterday's game. For one, I think URI is a pretty damn good team, I think they'll give Duke all they can handle. Lots of good players, I believe a few of them were near misses on the recruiting trail for Mick.

Yes, Mick's offense looks nonexistent as usual but Washington and Evans look like pros, which can cure a terrible offense.

Gary and Caupain need to play better period. Both fade in and out way too much, but as long as they show up at the right time of the year we will be fine.

I think KJ hurts more than he helps when he's on the floor. I'd personally prefer seeing Cumberland take more and more of minutes.

Absolutely have got to find a way to defend the three better.

Anyway, I saw a team that had real threats on the offensive end and that has me very hopeful.

Evans and Washington are first team all league players with a chance to be POY in the AAC and outside shots at All American honors. Caupain seems to playing with the weight of being name pre-season POY, he just needs to be all league good for the Bearcats to have the type of season people want.

Defense and rebounding lost them the Rhode Island but what does concern me is Mick's lack of timeout in the first half and early in the second half. It something that bugs me every year is the lack of timeouts to stop runs by the other team and to give his best players a chance to rest.

Today is a must win but either way this team will still finish 25-6 or 26-5 while dominating the AAC this season. Not playing Michigan at home hurts because it every big game outside of Xavier is played on the road.

RE: UC-Rhode Island Game Thread
I think Troy has a couple issues. I don't think he feels too much pressure from expectations. I think he's struggling with how to assert himself now that the focus of the offense has been to run through Washington. I think his other issue is Jenifer coming in and Troy playing off the ball. I think he's capable but it's a new role for him. I'm not really concerned about him figuring it out.

Gary I'm a little more concerned about. Same issue that he's struggling with how to integrate with more talented players; the way basketball is going I think it's going to be harder to feed two separate big guys. He needs to continue to be the best defensive player in the conference and be aggressive when he gets his chances on offense.

At times, Clark and Ellis complimented each other really well. I think it's going to take a little more time for Clark and Washington to develop that chemistry, but it is integral to our success this season. My biggest concern is definitely our bench though. Mick needs to start using all his schollys if we're only going to go 7 deep.

To me, Gary is what he is at this point. He has no post moves to speak of and I doubt he will by the time he graduates. URI had talented players that defended hard and Gary's big brother, backyard backdown move was completely ineffective. He absolutely has to do a better job rebounding to be really effective for UC.

Watch it. Now if you mention Troy you are about to touch the third rail in UC basketball. ZOT!

RE: UC-Rhode Island Game Thread
They hit crazy shots that no amount of defense would have stopped. That last 3, it doesn't matter what you do, shy of spiking it back in the guys face; it's going in and that's that. The problem wasn't that we couldn't guard. It was that we couldn't rebound on defense and had sloppy one shot possessions on the offensive end. Possessions that showed no offensive creativity. Possessions, where we just stood still and had no cuts, no anything. It's the third game of the year, we will get better. It's a question of how much better. Regardless of where we end up though, I look forward to watching the two NBA players on the roster do their thing and the development of Cumberland and Jenifer. I just wish Clark would step back up, he's not the greatest PF but he's better than a handful of points and 4-5 rebs. He needs to produce.

If he is only going to go seven deep. why does he need to use schollys that will just sit the bench?
