There are two separate things, here: auto-bids and playoff expansion.

I really think it's important not to conflate the two thing. I don't see why you have to automatically go to the former, if you implement the latter.

Agreed. It's easy to say "We love the national interest" when you're a fan of a team like Ohio State or Alabama (or a team in contention for the top 4 this year like Penn State). However, most people want to see important games for THEIR favorite team. This is what the NFL does well and why I believe it continues to be the #1 sport in the America by a large margin (even with lower ratings this year): fans of most teams can watch THEIR team at least mathematically compete for a playoff spot very late into the year (as opposed to college football where 80% of the teams are eliminated from the playoff by the end of the first month). Having auto-bids for the CFP would bring an element of that here where EVERY conference *division* title race actually matters from a national standpoint (as winning your division means you have a chance to win your conferences and that means you can get into the playoff without having a bunch of random dudes in Dallas determine your fate based on some "eye test"). That makes the national title chase more than a fantasy for teams compared to now... and if you believe your team has a CHANCE, then your interest grows and is much more solid.

I'm a firm believer that an 8-team playoff would increase interest even further. There would be a lot MORE games that would be important from a national standpoint in that format.

Yes. With an 8-team playoff, more than 25 teams would have a shot at making the playoff going into this Saturday's games.

YNot,

While I do like the fact that your proposal would save the historical matchups of the bowls ... it's DOA.

a - too many games
b - finals

no system will ever have it where a loser of a playoff game would then go to a bowl game.

stever hates bowl games, and wants them all to die. Screw tradition.

Meaningless like Michigan and Clemson losing last week? Every game matters so much now, that they lost and stayed in the top 4....

A tradition of meaningless games that make people outside of college football extremely wealthy while keeping revenues that could be distributed to schools (and eventually athletes).

Which is why the 8-team CFP 6+2 model is much more likely. Play Round 1 at the same time as the first bowl games under the current system. This eliminates the extra game for the Play-In crowd and provides more flexibility for final exams.

Regarding the bowl games - unless they are CFP bowl games, they are basically exhibition contests...right now.

IMO, I think they should play CFP games all no earlier than the 2nd week of Jan. Let Bowls have their limeline around NYD. They deserve it.

Then do the playoff, all at neutral sites.

Few fan bases will travel to a bowl game and then travel to 2 or 3 playoff games.

Homefield events for at least part of the playoff would highlight the exceptional culture of college football and grant a substantial reward to the best teams.

No, no.

You wouldn't play both a bowl game and a playoff game. It would still be that the CFP participants would bypass the bowls.

More money to make and better atmosphere for fans at a neutral site. A "bowl like atmosphere". Better TV setup too, possibly.

Yeah, because I'm proposing that we do away with the CFP and go back to just playing bowl games. 07-coffee3

your thing wouldn't work because of this little thing called the NFL who has January weekends covered with playoff games. It's not going to work.

As I recall, the CFP NC is played on a Monday and does just fine.

That's my favorite because I like the opening round bye incentive to be top 4 and really like the idea that some writer tossed out there of the wild cards automatically being seeded 11 and 12

Quarter finals and semi finals can also be played during the week.

You don't own a crystal ball.

Well of course it's your favorite. You're a G5 fan. But I don't think the G5 has earned that, yet.
