THAT is the biggest thing I think missing from Rice during DB's tenure - lining up against a top ranked opponent, brimming with confidence, and, as Tiki said, hitting them in the mouth early and often, taking the fight and composure completely out of their opponent.

They sure looked like they were having fun at "Touchdown! East Carolina University!" Stadium last night. That would make three times in the past year that UH fans had that feeling (Peach Bowl vs. FSU; vs. OU; vs. Louisville). When was the last time we got to experience and celebrate a win like that? CUSA Championship game is the most recent one I could remember; the win against UT in 1994 being the other.

Well I would add the wins vs BYU, Utah, and CSU when Chad Richardson ran up the middle on QB draws for 224 yards.

However, the one or two times I checked on that Louisville score the only thing I could think of was that they fired Tony Levine with a winning record to get Herman vs all the handwringing over Coach Bailiff. Different attitude entirely which is at the root of our situation. By no means, gawd help us, am I suggesting to look to them as an example to be followed. But an attitude change is clearly necessary.

That said, just because something good may be followed by something bad, that doesn't rob the good times of their enduring savor. There is nothing at all wrong with replaying the "Say yes, Coach!" clip and just enjoying it for itself.

And more to the OP, congratulations to the Cougars.

We also hit Texas A&M in the mouth early in 2013 and to a degree, against Vandy (2008) and Western Michigan (2008). Just couldn't sustain against A&M and Vandy.

Major congratulations to UH for the victory! And those gray uniforms look great. I wish that gray was a part of Rice's color scheme..."the Blue and White, Rice today, comes crashing through the skies.."

Totally forgot about Western Michigan. I guess my point was, when has Rice come out with that confidence, that swagger, to punch a quality opponent in the mouth, sustain it, and, at the end of the day, everyone - from the players, to the coaches, to the fans and even the other time - knew that Rice was the team that dominated that game from beginning to end? A result that made you want to rush the field and celebrate (which we couldn't do that night at Reliant, but everyone leaving the stadium KNEW that we were the dominating team that night). The Utah and BYU games in the 90s also came close to matching that feeling as well. The Cougars had it last night, and a couple of other times within the past year. I guess my point was that those seminal moments have been few and far between for Rice of late.

Louisville is 9-2.

Since Bailiff has been the coach, Rice has played 27* teams, in the regular season, that finished the season with at least 9 wins.

In those games, Rice is 1-26*.

* This is being generous, in counting the C-USA Championship Game as "regular season". If that is not included, the record is 0-26.

And we didn't just lose those games, but in almost all of them we were blown off the field and embarrassed.

Also wish the same about the uniforms except ours would have blue helmets, trim and numbers. The blue should be our official blue instead of navy blue.

Marshall in the conference championship game is the only one I can think of.

Western Michigan and Marshall are the only games that come to mind in the DB era. The 2001 (?) domination of Boise State was the one of the best under Coach Ken. After the 1Q, it was evident that BSU wanted nothing more of the option. Defensively, we got after them as well. It was a spanking.

I updated the list, in that I omitted 1 game.

In the 26 losses, Rice has been outscored 1399-555, which gives an average score of 54-21.

UH 2008 was another

2013 we went into the Tulane game with both teams having a chance at the division title and a conference championship berth. We didn't allow them a single first down until late in the third quarter and won that night with one of the most dominating defensive performances I've seen at any level.

Beating A&M and LSU in 1980. (Aggies on the road)
Arkansas in 1980 (that one was on the road and I didn't see it).
The 35-7 Thanksgiving weekend beatdown of U of H in 1980.

Texas in 1994.

Utah, BYU and Colorado State at home under Hatfield.

Beating undefeated and ranked New Mexico on the road under Hatfield, in front of what was then a record crowd for that state.

Beating bowl bound TCU at home in 1999, by scoring 42 unanswered points after spotting the Frogs 14 in the first quarter, and before winning 42-28, as Ken cleared the bench in the late 3rd and 4th quarters.

Boise State in 2001. Bowl-bound Hawaii in 2001.
