Hawaii exception allows another game for week 0
Like I predicted, the new rule allowing schools that play at Hawaii to schedule games in "week 0" is getting games scheduled. Cal @ UNLV just announced.
Prairie View A&M @ Rice on August 25th, 2018
Wyoming @ New Mexico St, August 25th, 2018, ESPN 2
Hawaii @ Colorado St, August 25th, 2018, CBS-SN
Arizona @ Hawaii on August 24th, 2019
New Mexico St @ Hawaii on August 29th, 2020
Cal @ UNLV on August 29th, 2020
Vanderbilt @ Hawaii on August 27th, 2022
There will be many more announced soon, I predict. Schedule Hawaii if you want a free week of exposure because no one else is playing in "0 Week"

With this setup, Hawaii may be able to survive independent with all home games.

RE: Hawaii exception allows 2nd game to start 1 week early-AZ@Hawaii
I think most of the Week 0 games will be games in Hawai'i.
San Jose State only moved their South Florida game to Week 0 to create an opening for SJSU to play at Texas in Week 2 and collect a fat check.
For nearly all teams, playing that week at home isn't going to be good for attendance. Students aren't on campus yet, some people are still taking summer vacations, it's too hot in the southwest and south, etc.
What you might see, given a couple of years of lead time to set it up, is a team playing in Hawai'i later in the year and scheduling one of those made-for-ESPN neutral site games in Week 0. Play that game in a dome or someplace where it's not unbearably hot in late August.

We shall see. I'm predicting this new rule will eventually allow 0 week to have 7 or 8 games.
-Hawaii will always play a game in week 0.
-The 4 MWC teams that play at Hawaii yearly will jump at this (Boise, SDSU etc)
-The PAC 12 teams that historically play at Hawaii. (Oregon, Washington, USC etc)
-BYU who regularly plays at Hawaii.
-Army and Navy who both occasionally play at Hawaii
-Notre Dame that has played at Hawaii in the past.
-then theirs the Umass types who play at Hawaii late in the year as their "bowl"
That's a great line up of big game possibilities in the years to come!
Cheers!

I believe will play a game in Provo in August 2017. Likely against an FCS opponent. BYU plays at Hawaii to end the 2017 season and is set to schedule one more home game.
Week 0 payday game is perfect for BYU's 2017 schedule - warm-up game before LSU and BYE week between Wisconsin and Utah St. rivalry game.

Sorry ... just not buying the "common sense" refrain that teams shouldn't be scheduling home games in week 0 because of weather and because school isn't in session yet.
Umm ... games on Thursday before Labor Day, anyone???

Maybe you guys use this to get a big P5 game instead? Not everyone has filled their OOC schedules..I'd be shocked if BYU wasn't trying for that.
Cheers!

I'm not a fan of this. They already give teams the right to have a 13th game - that's more than enough of an advantage to make up for the distance to Hawai'i. Letting them schedule a game in week 0 just gives the Rainbow Warriors an unfair advantage.

I disagree. Coaches have no interest in playing 13 straight weeks with no byes. Lots of schools have stopped doing the 13th game just for that reason.

USF/SJSU could be played at a HS stadium...be lucky if 2000 attend.

Agree that playing 13 in a row is a non-starter.
Week 0 games are a much better reward.

With more conferences having a CCG, the 13th game advantage is wiped out due to have no by weeks.
But I'm not sure what CB is saying that is gives Hawaii and unfair advantage. Cincy could schedule a game in Hawaii and get a week 0 game also.

That's right. The new "Week 0" rule is intended to restore the incentive to get mainland teams to make the long and expensive trip to Hawai'i, given that the compression of the regular season wiped out the attractiveness of the "13th game" incentive.

Cincy played at Hawaii in 2008. If a school has a problem with schools playing @ Hawaii and getting a game in week 0 for it, maybe they can schedule a game at Hawaii themselves and they can also take advantage of this new rule. Just a thought. Wisconsin, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington and BYU are some of the non-MWC schools playing at Hawaii in the years to come.
Cheers!

I'm glad this special rule was put in place to give incentive to mainland schools for playing in Hawaii.
I wish Alaska would start a FBS team in Anchorage (with a domed stadium), and give the same incentive.

BYU has officially added a FCS game (Portland State) for 2017 in Week 0 as a 13th game warmup to their Advocare Texas Kickoff against LSU in Houston.
That makes the schedule:
1 Neutral game (week 1 LSU in Houston)
6 Home games (Portland State, Utah, Wisconsin, Boise State, San Jose State, UMass)
6 Road games (Utah State, Mississippi State, East Carolina, Fresno State, UNLV, Hawai'i)

So really, any team in any particular season can play in week 0.
You just have to work with a team playing at Hawaii that year, to schedule a game with you in week 0.

correct. If Alabama could convince Fresno St or Colorado St to move their game to week 0, they could play in week 0.

So far 3 games have been added to week 0
USF @ SJSU--2017
Portland St @ BYU--2017
Arizona @ Hawaii--2019
So 5 more games can still happen for next year. Hawaii, 3 MWC teams and the other OOC home games for Hawaii. I wish ECU would schedule a game at Hawaii for 0 week. We've had some fun out there before (beating Boise in the bowl in 07) and it gets us a leg up for the big OOC games vs VT, SC and WVU etc coming up.
Cheers!
