Kep Brown, #5 juco in the country, a 6' 5" slugger from Spartanburg Jr. College has committed to the Hawks (according to Star News).

Nope. Doesn't work like that in College Baseball. You have to wait 3 years after HS to get drafted. There's no one and done in baseball once you make the decision to go to school. You either leave straight out of HS OR you play ball for 3 years at the collegiate level. So he'll be here a minimum of two years, since he only played 1 year as a JUCO and is entering his sophomore year.

It's a system I wish they'd adopt in the NBA, but I digress.....

RE: Baseball gets nice commit
Actually, my bad, he WAS eligible for the draft this past June, per this article: http://www.postandcourier.com/sports/for...32e31.html

Didn't realize he was signed by Miami. He tore his achilles in April, however, and was only taken in the 10th round by the Cardinals after his Senior year in HS. He turned down the contract, and opted to go to Spartanburg Methodist instead of Miami, where hit .279 with 11 HR, 35 RBI, .918 OPS and struck out 41 times in 136 AB's. Going the JUCO route allowed him to retain his draft eligibility the next season.

However, since he wasn't taken this past June, and the next draft isn't until June 2017, he'll play 1 season with us THEN look to get taken, I would think.

I had to look up the JUCO rules as well. All it takes is one season there to be draft eligible.

Correct. But since he didn't get taken in the 2016 draft (surprisingly), he's coming here, which is awesome. Kid has a huge ceiling and was a projected 1st round pick if he didn't tear his achilles.

I suppose teams didn't take him because they figured he wouldn't sign if he wasn't going to get solid bonus money. If they weren't going to take him in the first 5 rounds, why take him anywhere in Round 6-40 if there was little chance he'd sign?

And I guess he WILL now have to spend 2 years here?

good question, i'd bet his age might have something to do with it too. I think 21 = free to draft

You can get drafted anytime out of JUCO that is why it is such a good option

So is he coming here for the spring semester? If not and he plays at Spartanburg this spring he would be eligible for draft.

This is all the article says on that:

Quote:PerfectGame.org ranks Brown as the No. 5 overall junior college prospect in the country. He’ll rejoin SMC teammates Mason Berne and Kevon Perkins on the UNCW roster next spring if the major leagues don’t come calling.

No matter what happens this season or in the 2017 draft, Brown is grateful to have another chance to show exactly what he can do.

So I guess it wouldn't be until 2017.
