02-13-banana Make sure all players and coaches and fans bring back suitcases full of Habana cigars, which is apparently quite accepted if not exactly "legal"!! Recommend Romeo e Julieta or Monte Christo. Can sell them for MEGA-bucks in Houston. Even more in New York or Boston!! Best cigars EVER! I just got two boxes from a Cuban friend who brings them in fresh and sells them to me for only $250 per box; probably worth over $1000 a box in NYC.... 04-jawdrop

Quote:The remaining four baseball games against Cuban Federation teams, Mayabeque Huracanes, Pinar del Rio Vegueros, Cienfuegos Elefantes and Los Industriales, have been cancelled in respect for Cuba’s national mourning period for former president Fidel Castro. The mourning period began yesterday (Nov. 26) and will be observed until Castro’s state funeral Dec. 4.

The Rice University baseball team will continue educational and cultural events. Today, the team and travel party are going on a daylong tour. We will post an update this evening.

Actually, it is perfectly legal now to bring back a small quantity for personal consumption. They cannot be sold here, yet. The FDA has to do their thing first, per the Briar Shoppe in the Village.

So I guess it's tourism and an early flight back for the Owls?

Actually, you can now legally bring back up to 4 boxes of cigars. They are pricey, however.

Not sure about the team, but I think the rest of the group is staying through the duration since most of it has been prepaid.

Today we did Day 1 of a walking tour of downtown Havana, featuring the tour of the Museum de la Revolucion. Magnifico. Couple great team photos were taken, which I'm sure will be posted in the blog. The guys seem to be taking everything in stride and having a great time.

We're told USA Today will include a mention of us in tomorrow's writeup. The Rice Owls PR machine (Sully and Co.) hard at work.

Also, while walking in and around Presidents Square this afternoon, our own Sarah Longpre and Michelle Hicks were interviewed by David Muir of ABC News, who was looking to interview Americans to get their perspective on the situation.

Edit: Here's the ABC News segment with Sarah, Michelle and Dave being interviewed at the very end (along with a shot of the Rice baseball team exchanging handshakes with the Cuban team we played last Friday)...

http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/video/cub...o-43805526

...It appeared that David Muir was following in our footsteps across Havana today, as many of the spots you see in the video (including the Plaza de la Revolucion and the lineup of 1950s cars) was part of our walking tour this afternoon.

...just one correction-- bars are not allowed to serve alcoholic beverages throughout the 9 days of mourning, hotels and restaurants most certainly can (or at least they are doing so whether legal or not).

What are the implications of Fidel Castro's death on the trip? This will make for great stories, if nothing else...

Sounds like the baseball and cultural trip has become a cultural and history trip.

Correct, but it was always going to be about history as well. The student-athletes have been taking a course all semester on Cuba. It's a 9 credit course, with 6 credits already earned, and the additional 3 credits upon their return and the completion of an essay providing their individual reflections of the trip.

I can think of other schools where the athletes do not write essays-either not assigned or someone else writes the essay for them.

Here's today's blog entry covering today's activities, along with a terrific photo gallery...

http://baseball.blogs.rice.edu/2016/11/2...DzsVTVSWT8

Following today's formal activities, adventurers extraordinaire, Tom and Jeanette Hix (part of the traveling alumni, friends group), braved the traffic and the lines in Revolucion Square to observe the ashes of Castro. It took them well over an hour to make it to the line, and then another two hours winding through the line, but they succeeded in observing the ashes....and they made it back to the hotel (eventually) safely and in one piece!

Finally, here's some additional historical perspective from Professor Luis Duno-Gottberg, who has been invaluable on this trip as a source of information...

https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/artic...t-in-cuba/

Tomorrow we have a full day and an early start as we will be venturing off to one of the leading tobacco farms. I'm sure the photo gallery tomorrow will be entertaining!
