Thomas More - vacates national title due to sanctions
Thomas More is a small (1900 students) Catholic D3 school in Northern Kentucky (10 miles from downtown Cincinnati). The school won back-to-back D3 Woman's Basketball national title in 2015 and 2016. From the Cincinnati Enquirer:
http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/c.../93907266/

"The NCAA Division III Committee on Infractions hit the Saints with major penalties and sanctions, finding that the college failed to monitor its women’s basketball program. The Committee found that three-time national player of the year Sydney Moss was provided with free housing by former assistant coach Jerry Allen for eight months while she recovered from the knee injury that ended her 2013-2014 season...

The penalties include:

Public reprimand and censure for the college.

Two years of probation for the college from Nov. 15, 2016, through Nov. 14, 2018.

A vacation of all wins in which the student-athlete competed while ineligible. The college will identify the games impacted after the release of the public report.

A $2,500 fine (self-imposed by the college).

An outside audit of the college’s athletics program, with an emphasis on financial aid policies and procedures. The school must implement all recommendations made by the reviewer (self-imposed by the college).

Several staff members, including the head coach, athletics director and compliance officer, must attend at least one NCAA Regional Rules Seminar

....

Moss played one season at the University of Florida before transferring to TMC. Moss was three-time NCAA Division III player of the year, but her 2015 award will be vacated as well. "

Someone had to pay for Louisville's transgressions.

Do we think this is overkill only because this violation happened on a D-III national championship team, rather than D-I?

Look at this quote from the article:

"three-time national player of the year Sydney Moss was provided with free housing by former assistant coach Jerry Allen"

What would you think if, hypothetically, the best player on an FBS college football team got to live in a house rent-free for a year. If that team won a national title, do you think the NCAA should strip them of the title?

People would complain, but the NCAA would not do shyte.

At least the punishment for Thomas More wasn't beheading.

I had a feeling someone would say this. But it doesn't make any sense. From the article:

"The NCAA Division III Committee on Infractions.."

I highly doubt that this committee is staffed or unduly influenced by any of the power players in D1 sports.

There is some evidence to the contrary:

That's also this from way back in the day. Go to the 24:50 mark to see it.
