OT Campbell University moves up to FCS
Campbell U. restarted their football program about ten years ago after not fielding a team for about half a century. They are in the Pioneer Conference which is non-scholarship. It 2018 they will begin offering scholarships and join the Big South in football. They are already in the Big South for all other sports.

This is a private school that is very aggressive in moving forward. In the last few years they have moved their law school to Raleigh as a preemptive strike, established engineering, medical and nursing schools. The football move is an indication that they understand how to prosper as a private school in difficult times.

More power to them, but the express lanes to moving up to FBS have stalled, due to the stoppage of P5 conference expansion and I am afraid they will end up like Liberty University, standing on the outside looking in through the FBS window (much like the AAC teams, who are stuck looking through at the P5 window).

I don't think the FBS is their goal. A competitive team to attract applicants and encourage alumni donate puts them in a position to grow. They appear to be aware of their limitations while finally pulling the trigger to reach their potential. They are competing for students with schools like Elon and Davidson, not NC State or ECU.

They already played football in the FCS subdivision in the Pioneer league. Good move for them regardless

Campbell University is seeing how attractive Liberty University is to students who would choose a religious school. Campbell, a good school, seeks to grow with Liberty.

Liberty may be a powerhouse. The school may network like BYU and Notre Dame, in the future.

Campbell, a Baptist school, is a much better school than Liberty. I would not be surprised to see Campbell trying to schedule Baylor.

Campbell's realistic goal is probably CAA/SoCon which isn't too hard to achieve. There are only a few FCS teams left that can move up to the FBS and most seem content to be big fish in a small pond.

James Madison (VA) is easily the most ready. Their stadium is impressive, more so than quite a handful of current of FBS programs. They wanted the MAC or C-USA, but the desire wasn't reciprocated. They dismissed any overtures from the Sun Belt. But now that that door seems to have closed, I wonder if they regret.

Liberty (VA) is ready in terms of finances, on-field performance, etc., but they'll be hard-pressed as a very conservative school getting invited to the all-public Sun Belt, almost all-public C-USA, or all-public MAC.

Montana, Montana State, and North Dakota State could do it if they wanted, but they seem to like being FCS just fine.

Eastern Kentucky wanted to join the Sun Belt but was passed over in favor of Coastal Carolina.

Jacksonville State (AL) has long been interested in moving up but the problem is there is already one C-USA school in Alabama and two Sun Belt schools.

Missouri State supposedly has had some interest in the Sun Belt, but they're sooooo bad in football and not even that great in basketball.

Maybe there are some schools in Texas interested in moving up, otherwise, I don't know of any others.

So if Campbell can get a few winning seasons, do you guys see them as a good fit in the AAC?

If they change to Campbell Soup would they be a good fit in the AAC? I say yes with the variety of large and small schools in our league.

I remember they didn't even have a regulation sized basketball court. I'm assuming that has been addressed.

The Pioneer is FCS non-scholarship conference. The big thing here is they are now going to offer scholarships. That is the big deal.

Campbell has lessened the Southern Baptist influence in recent years. It is still there but nothing like it use to be.

Campbell Chunky Soup sounds a whole lot tougher.

Although plus size folks might be offended and start agitating.

Campbell is a small Baptist school. I don't see them as a good fit for the American. We would gain more by adding a school like Old Dominion or Massachusetts, if we expanded.

At one time, you couldn't be caught kissing. It wasn't Bob Jones University strict but it was not too far behind.
