Tubby ranks almost last over past 7 years in playing guys with 2 fouls in 1st half- 5% chance if you get 2 fouls you will see the floor again in first half:

310 Pat Kelsey (4) Winthrop 867 58 6.7
311 Greg Lansing (6) Indiana St. 1312 84 6.4
312 Gregg Marshall (7) Wichita St. 1844 112 6.1
313 Murray Garvin (3) South Carolina St. 645 38 5.9
314 Fran McCaffery (7) Iowa 1458 84 5.8
315 Tubby Smith (7) Memphis 1310 64 4.9
316 Joe Dooley (3) Florida Gulf Coast 983 48 4.9
317 Tony Jasick (5) Jacksonville 1615 76 4.7
318 Michael Huger (1) Bowling Green 221 8 3.6
319 Matt McCall (1) Chattanooga 191 6 3.1
320 Tic Price (2) Lamar 717 16 2.2
321 Tim Jankovich (3) SMU 798 13 1.6

With a balanced bench, it's a pretty good strategy for preserving more firepower in the 2nd half.

not really interesting in my opinion. Seems it's always been a pretty standard rule for most coaches outside of fluke times (ie your PG who rarely ever gets more than 3 in a whole game, but by fluke ends up with 2 early. may keep playing him a bunch, and only get cautious if #3 comes up)

Agreed...And defensive minded coaches don't want guys out there trying not to foul.

Not standard at all: number 1 coach has players with 2 fouls utilizing 55% of PT. huge difference. I'm a stats guy-doesn't imply one is better than other. For instance, notice that Pastner and Coach K are almost identical in this stat:

http://kenpom.com/blog/foul-trouble-data-by-coach/

"Among gentlemen that have coached in all seven seasons of the sample, Tubby Smith has been the most protective of starters with two fouls. He’s let a starter play just 64 of a possible 1,310 foul-troubled minutes, or 4.9% of the time. Memphis fans, you’ve been warned."

Did you really just compare Pastner to Coach K?

Warned that Tubby likes to protect players from getting their third foul in the first half? Gee, I am shaking in my boots. How will I sleep tonight now that I am overcome with such anxiety and trepidation?

I'm not sure but I know Black would have significantly less playing time using this hard and fast (95%) rule.

Happened to Chad in exhibition and KJ last night...not sure how it will work against tougher competition with the depth problem up front.

I'm sure the players have been warned. That's his rule and his system. This means nothing unless you correlate it to something.

Here's the recipe for large post count

1. Post the first thing that comes to mind
2. Stick around for eons

Lot of bullying going on. Doesn't bother me at all.

He would claim I was comparing those two coaches if I posted they were in same gym looking at prospects. Just the arsehole he is. Plus he gets another post.
